ABANDONED. Fantasy or Sci-fi? Boy gets pulled into an ancient war on the side of a sleeping civilization (sleepers) vs. dark force. Read before 2012?

What I remember of this book is that it’s about a boy who gets pulled in to an ancient war between some dark force and a civilization of sleepers who wake to fight it. As the conflict continues fewer and fewer sleepers awaken. The boy finds out he can wake the sleepers. There’s also a cool ice prison that the characters get trapped in where their the moisture in their breath causes the walls of the prison to thicken making it smaller and smaller with the intent to crush them. The sleeping civilization also has either energy or plasma weapons specifically I remember one of them has a whip that she tries to use to melt the ice prison unsuccessfully. I listened to this on audiobook I think before 2012.
