The Talisman question

My son has been begging me to read Stephen king for a few years now. But I don't want to spoil the books by having him read them too early and losing the impact and joy of these books. We saw "stand by me" to pacify him ( great coming of age of movie). But thought I would ask the goodreads community for their thoughts on when to start Stephen King books and which ones to start with. I was thinking "The Talisman" written with Peter Straub.
