Christine Kallner (chris08226) | 8 comments Apologies if this has been asked previously, but I have not been able to find the answer! I was wondering what the policy is for attributing an illustrator who did a book's cover art only? Is it OK to list them with role as Illustrator or is there another appropriate role? Or is this not something that we are allowed to list if they have not illustrated the interior as well? The illustrator I am looking at in particular is Trina Schart Hyman who has illustrated a great many covers in addition to the books she has illustrated fully. Many thanks in advance! ~Christine

Cover artists should NOT be listed in the author fields. Cover artists may be noted in the description field.

Hi Christine

Cover artists don't get an author credit. The Librarians manual says information about them can be added to the book description.

Christine Kallner (chris08226) | 8 comments Thanks! I know I've seen books in the Library with the cover artist listed as the illustrator, but those must have been done in error.

As a side question, is the information in the description (such as cover artist) searchable? Seems it might be a bit difficult to find there if someone is seeking out editions with certain covers. Thanks again!

Some books are imported with that information, others its librarian error.

I would doubt if that information is searchable from the description.

If you wanted I guess you could make a list of a cover artist's works.

No.

Please note that questions of site functionality are not Librarians Group issues. For general site queries, please either check out Goodreads Help (with its FAQ), or you may wish to use the Contact Us page.

Christine Kallner (chris08226) | 8 comments Ah, yes, I can definitely see how the data could be imported that way. Thanks again for your help, I can see now from the links shared above that my question was answered in a rather obvious place in the Librarian Manual, but I kept getting weird unrelated results when I tried to do a search for the answer!

And that is a great idea about making a list -- I may do that :)
