This is an installment in the Walt Longmire mystery series, which was made into a TV series. I don't think the series specifically mirrors all the books. I am waiting till after I finish reading them all to watch the TV version.
Walt is a sheriff in Wyoming around the age of retirement but he keeps working and often accomplishing amazing physical feats and cheating death. There is a strong element of what you could call Native American magical realism, yet the stories aren't farfetched. I love the cast of characters that surrounds Walt, Henry Standing Bear, Lucian Connoly, Vic Moretti and the canine simply named Dog.
But the main factor in my love of this series is the inimitable narration by George Guidall on the audiobooks. He is the granddaddy of audiobook narration, having started in the 1980's. it happened that early on he narrated a Western book and he sort of got typecast. However, he has now narrated hundreds of book in many genres. One of the audiobooks has an extended interview between George and the author, which is wonderful.
