Chapters 1-21
I've been wanting to read this book since it came out, and every teen I've given it to has loved it. So I'm excited to start the new year off with a really fun read, and it has not disappointed so far.

A little implausible, but fun, like 39 clues, only for older kids. I'm wondering if the guy (view spoiler)[ Avery has been playing chess with has anything to do with this. She doesn't recognize him from the portrait of Hawthorne she saw, so maybe not, but that was my first thought (hide spoiler)]. I wouldn't mind being her ;)

Chapters 22-44
I've always liked books about puzzles and cleverness. I will say though, I'm a little worried. If Jameson and the other brother are right when they say that Avery is (view spoiler)[ a puzzle piece, not a player, what happens when they solve it? She'd better get some sort of payout. (hide spoiler)] I am, of course, immensely curious about why and how she was selected, what her connection to the Hawthornes is. This is probably going to be like Truly Devious where we don't even GET the answer in this book and then I'll really be chapped off because I don't have time to read the next one this month. I will have to though if I don't get some answers here.
Oh and I love that the brothers' (view spoiler)[ middle names are apparently clues that also have to do with the borders of the estate. That's a little brilliant. (hide spoiler)]

I feel like this part of the book has been spinning its wheels a little. There's been the one major incident where (view spoiler)[ Avery was shot at, and the rest has all sort of revolved around that and finding the middle-name clues. Oh and everyone's mad and Avery can't really trust anyone and everyone's a suspect (hide spoiler)] Which I would expect in a mystery, and the author is doing a good job of that. I've no idea who has done what BUT (view spoiler)[ I do think Toby is still alive -- maybe he's the chess guy. And I do think Avery's mom had something to do with all this simply because somewhere she learned to turn everything into a game. (hide spoiler)]

Well... called that one :D Such a fun book, and of course now I MUST have the next one that I don't have time to read, ugh. Really enjoyed this - it's like... 39 clues meets Floors or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or something like that. I wish we had more books like this, especially in YA.
I mean, technically we did find out SOME of the "who-did-it" I guess, but there are still WAY too many questions.

And you make a good point BUT I think there's more to it than that. Which is going to be in the sequel. I'm pretty sure this is going to be a mystery series a la Truly Devious in which the real mystery spans several books.

I would LOVE to read the next one but January is really full for me. If I can snag a copy of it, perhaps the 10th/11th or the 16th maybe? or the 29th or postpone until February.

Yeah for real, Libby should not have taken custody of her sister if she was going to behave like this. Unbelievably irresponsible. If you take custody of a child then you need to put the child’s needs above your own.
