And the anger of the family she has to live with at least for a whole year, I wouldn't want that as well. I have a theory why she was chosen to inherit though and maybe it has something to do with Harry. Ever since he was introduced in the first chapter and then when the first thing she did was give him money I thought it could have a greater meaning, but I'm not sure what it could be.

I do like the Hawthorne boys but I don't trust them. I don't think any of them want something good for Avery and I think Grayson is the only one who's at least mostly honest about trying to find out who Avery is and why his grandfather picked her.

I also don't fully like the sister. She told her (Ex?-)boyfriend about the money and where they were going. I wonder if he'll reappear later in the story. (hide spoiler)]

I knew that Harry had something to do with all this, but I wouldn't have guessed that he's Toby. But if Hawthorne had all those pictures of Avery, he knew where to find his son. He even has a picture from him (even though you only see the back of his head). So why has Xander to look for him? I want to find out what happened 20 years ago and why Toby left the house.

I also hope we find out more why Avery was picked, I still think there has to be more to the story. There are far to many coincidences. (hide spoiler)]

I guess it is to be expected that the family felt jilted at the reading of the will. But most of those people seemed just awful. I can’t imagine that living with them is going to be pleasant. I am really excited to learn why Avery inherited everything.

And I like her sister. She seems nice but a little too naive at times. I wonder if that interaction that Nash and her sister had meant something?

(view spoiler)[I wonder if there is a love triangle in this series. I am getting vibes from Jameson but there are also some enemies-to-lovers vibes coming from Grayson.

So she isn’t related to the Hawthornes so that theory is out. I keep puzzling over what the correlation could be between her to Tobias Hawthorne. She keeps mentioning that her mother used to tell her that she had a secret but that seems too obvious. That is probably a red herring to throw us off. And then there is the weirdness about the missing son who may or may not have died in a house fire. That is strange. If they hadn’t tested her DNA to prove she isn’t a Hawthorne then I would think that maybe the missing son could be her father. It’s all so strange and I keep racking my brain. =P

I think that it kind of sucks that they are making her change her wardrobe. Even if I won the lottery, I wouldn’t change my core style just because I had more money. She seems indifferent to it though. I kind of wish that she had told them to take a hike and that she would wear what she wanted as she told them on her sister’s behalf. (hide spoiler)]

Dude, this book has my brain going a mile a minute. Seriously, what is going on? Everyone is suspicious. And now Avery is getting shot at. Luckily, Jameson actually seemed as though he was shocked so hopefully, he didn’t have anything to do with it or know anything about it. Perhaps Rebecca is angling for revenge for her dead sister? Though, I guess that doesn’t make sense since her anger would probably be directed at the Hawthornes and not Avery. It’s all so messed up. I am really liking the storytelling though. (view spoiler)[That was really messed up how they used her as bait. They really should have warned her about that. I seriously cannot figure out who was trying to shoot at her. It seems like it was Drake but someone else had to have put him up to it because he wouldn’t have been able to get onto the property otherwise. So it must have been an inside job. It really sucks that the whole thing has made Avery question her sister’s loyalty. But honestly, if I were in her shoes I don’t know what I would be thinking.

I have noticed that Grayson always tends to run off and tell everything to his mother. They seem really close or confidants at the very least.

I really think that what Nash told her at the beginning may be correct. That she is basically a pawn in the whole thing and it is a game for the grandsons to figure out. If their grandfather’s letters basically said that money corrupts and he was originally going to give all of his money to charities then I imagine leaving Avery as his heir is a form of charity. She had nothing prior to this whole thing.

What if the homeless man that she always bought food for and played chess with is the lost son? And that is why she was chosen as the heir? I don’t know. Maybe that is far-fetched. (hide spoiler)]

I do like the idea of the birthday gifts from their grandfather though. It seems like he was trying to raise them all to be as knowledgable as possible and to have hobbies.

(view spoiler)[OMG, I so called it! The homeless guy in the park is Tobias II. Though, it honestly feels weird that he is because of how Hawthorne found Avery in a diner when she was six. I mean, she didn’t even know Tobias II then. I wonder if he has amnesia or if he ran off because his father was going to disinherit his whole family and so he faked his death.

I liked that Hawthorne wanted his grandsons to work together but I thought that the whole backstory was a little convoluted. Thea and Rebecca were into each other but Xander was into one of them. And then there was the whole mess with Emily, Jameson, and Grayson. All of that seemed like it was trying to be super dramatic but kind of missed the mark a bit. I was expecting something juicier than all of that. But maybe there will be more in the next book now that Xander has to find Tobias II. And maybe we will find out if it is a coincidence that Avery knows him?

Overall, I really liked this book. I don’t read very many mysteries but this one was perfect. (hide spoiler)]

Drake infuriated me, and while I don't blame Libby for being scared into telling him, she gave away so many details. The new mystery of Emily would be super concerning for me if I were Avery. Jameson and Grayson became super tense about it. But those two are just off.
