1. Use this thread to discuss any thoughts or insights you may have while reading the book, especially those that don't really fit any other thread.

Mariangel | 724 comments I am glad we read this book. It provides a lot of resources if I ever get into a discussion about the Pope with someone who believes the myth.

Here’s my review:

I agree. I have been thinking about Cornwell, Goldhagen, Carroll, Wills and others who push this calumny against Pius XII and the concept of lying. It seems to me that in the ordinary case, one must know and be aware that you are saying something untruthful in order for it to be a lie. But when you publish criticism of another person, especially in the guise of an historical book or other work of scholarship, you have a duty to explore at least the publicly available evidence and to evaluate it fairly. Given the evidence that Dalin has assembled, one can only conclude that Pius XII's critics are so blinded by their ideology or other bias as to be willfully ignorant of the truth. This makes them liars in my book. I am not aware of any of them having repented for their lies.

Curious about the turn to defending Mel Gibson and the Passion of the Christ.

I suppose that's right. Given that the truth about Pius XII is 180 degrees from what the global left would have us believe, it begs the question: why? If the answer is that there appears to be a reflexive anti-Catholic bias against the Catholic Church and Catholics among the left in academia and the media and the rest of the chattering classes, then another example, showing the same characters engaged in similar calumnies, supports that argument.

It helps to finish the book. It is clear that in the final chapters Dalin seeks to set the attacks on Pius XII with the curious modern phenomena of attacks on JPII and Mel Gibson for anti-Semitism and the refusal by the same attackers to see or to speak against the anti-Semitism rampant in the Islamic world. Thus these attackers are clearly not as concerned with anti-Semitism as they pretend, but are moved by animus towards the Catholic Church, which is the main institution standing in the way of the goals of the progressive left.

Bice (bicebeechay) | 111 comments I did not know where to post this and I apologize if in wrong one.

I am gratified to be reading The Myth of Hitler’s Pope although I am not too far along.
I belong to the Auxiliary of the Oblate Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Blessed Madre Teresa Casini founded the order in Rome, in 1894. They have houses in many countries including the one here in the USA near me.
I have always had an interest in the Holocaust and WWII. Once I asked Sister Letizia (of Happy Memory and then well into her 90’s) if her convent in Rome hid Jewish people. She said yes. The women dressed as Sisters and stayed at the convent. The men were disguised as Priests and lived elsewhere. I then asked if she wanted to hide them. Without hesitation she said firmly “ No we did not. We were very afraid and had had several scares with authorities coming to the door.” When I asked: then why did you hide them? she answered: “WE HAD TO OBEY THE POPE WHO ORDERED US TO DO SO”.
So much for “Hitler’s Pope”!
I love this story Sister told me. One of the Jewish women gave birth. Her husband was summoned to come see his new child. The good Sisters put the baby in a large open Gospel book. To any prying eyes it looked as if the “Priest” were reading the book. Love that!

Mariangel | 724 comments That's a great story, Bice.

This is the perfect spot to put it, thank you. And yes, what a great confirming story. It is important that we document as many of these as possible as I don't think the secular world will stop at their efforts to lie about the Church. They will insist that white is black, and black white and demand that you agree.

Yes, they say something like this:

1. There is no truth, each person can decide their own truth.
2. You must accept what I say, for what I say is the truth.

And they can't even see that they are incurring in a contradiction.
Question: Are they weak-minded?

Bice (bicebeechay) | 111 comments Well said John and Manuel!
So agree.

Fergus, Weaver of Autistic Webs | 136 comments If I can just add, John and Manuel, that Peter Kreeft’s argument in Doors in the Wall of the World deals with such postmodernistic blindness quite effectively!

This is exactly right - the self-refutation of relativism. :-)

I'm not sure what that means. My guess is that if you asked people what they thought about Pope Pius XII, a solid majority would think he supported the Nazi's in some way. Pius still hasn't been recognized by Israel as righteous among the gentiles. These lies seem to have long legs. As Churchill said, a lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.

Hello John it is an spanish expression who described as the lies were discovered with the spending of the time. I say personally that these lies firstly were spread by Stalin and after by some liberal catholics and after was the play the Vicar, and nowadays to opposite to John Paul II and Benedict XVI are lies repeated by bad catholics, however i am totally persuasded that at finally the truth will prevalace st last.
