This chapter takes readers through different instructional practices for teaching comprehension. I really liked this chapter because it not only provides many strategies for comprehension but each topic gets their own “tips” page. Each page goes into great detail about thinking out loud, rereading, interactive reading aloud, annotating text, co-constructing anchor charts, guiding discussion and student conversation, and sharing our own literate lives. One strategy that I really liked is sharing our own literate lives. If teachers take the opportunity to share their story or history with reading and writing, especially if it was hard for them, it could open up their relationships with their students. If students realize they are going through the same struggles the teacher did, they could go to them for help. Another idea from this tip, is reading to your students. This could open their minds up to different interests’ they could have and could also help their reading improve. Their reading and vocabulary skills could improve if their minds are opened to words they have never heard before. I like this idea of reading to students, as it could serve as a brain break or a good transition into another activity.
