Aha, I think I'll be a bit haunted by that image for the rest of the day! What's your chapka made of? Something the polar bear would have happily eaten itself?"

To be honest Glad, I don't know. It was presented to me as a gift by an Inuit hunter woman in Iqaluit, Nunavut in Canada. She said something very earnest sounding in Inuktitut, perhaps along the lines of "never wear this in public", which I haven't. I accepted it in the (perhaps wolf) spirit in which it was given, hunting being the primary source of income and sustenance for some of these very poor and disenfranchised people. I won't get into the politics of that any further but suffice to say I don't wear it out, in any sense. The neck piece was from an old coat and is most certainly faux. I can delete the photo now, as it was only in response to Mach's challenge and I'd rather be remembered for my own natural moustache than a painted on one!

Hushpuppy Reen wrote: "It was presented to me as a gift by an Inuit hunter woman in Iqaluit, Nunavut in Canada."

Wow, I'm glad I asked Reen!

Yes, I always hated my mum's fur coats ever since I was a young kid (mink and fox, ARGH), but I'd never pass judgment on people's whose whole culture and sustenance is based on hunting! Since it is a gift with such resonance, I'd wear it proudly whenever snow would make this weather-appropriate.

(Talking of wolf spirit, you might like the trailer I linked to in my reply to booklooker over at TLS.)

message 105: by Hushpuppy (new)

Hushpuppy PS to Reen: On postimage, you have the possibility of uploading the picture for only one day, so you don't have to think of deleting it or anything after that...

message 106: by LoveTheBees (new)

LoveTheBees | 11 comments Hi everyone. I was IDsomeverylongnumber over at the G for many years before finally working out how to change it to LoveTheBees. Dipped in and out of the reading group and TLS over the years as able. Very grateful this has been set up as a substitute. Thank you!
New to goodreads. I use the iReaditNow app to document my own reading.

You'll see there is also a Who's Who animal directory of sorts!

I'd happily adopt every single one of them right now, but I am a bit in love with greenfairy/Maggie's cat, and Kayaki's dog.

message 109: by Miri (new)

Miri | 94 comments Now that's a challenge - I'll have a think about how to secure Stella's victory in any pet contest.

Thanks, I'll take a look. I'm not an animé aficionado; I only watched Spirited Away for the first time last week. Totoro I do know.

Inter, if I get the time this week, I might start putting together a document with the matching of identities (with Guardian and GR avatars too) that people will be able to refer too...

I just changed my forename and scrubbed my profile at the same time. A long, long time ago when I was still naive about sharing stuff on the net, I used my whole moniker. Correcting that is a plus for Ersatz!

Yes, she has. But if you'd like, you could ask her to be a 'friend' and keep in contact like that...

scarletnoir | 4411 comments Gladarvor wrote: Ok, so you go to your Profile, ask to Edit it, Browse for an image for your profile. When you press the button 'Browse' this then prompts the file directory of 'Photos' on your laptop? So far, is this right?

And in that Photos directory, you have files of all your pics, but here it seems empty? Still right?

Pretty much - there is a 'reader' which we are expected to replace with our own choice of avatar or photo; beneath that, 'Choose file'.

I click on that, click on Photos and get in the 'box' a screen split in two - top grey, bottom white. No photos!

Ok, so from that I'd say your pictures are not in the directory (the 'box') that is opened by default when you're asked to choose a file.

You need to either copy/paste the picture you want in that very specific directory, or find your way to the directory where your pictures are (I don't have a mac so I'm not sure about the navigation, but that'd probably be on the left of that box, where you could see other directories on your laptop). Sorry I can't be of more help!

I tried to reply to this by also editing the original message, but it seems to have 'disappeared', so in case you (Gladarvor) can't see it:

Once I am in my GR profile, I go to the 'little human holding a book'; beneath this is a 'Choose file' option.

I click on that - it shows in effect the 'Finder' on the Apple laptop.

I click on 'Photos', and in the 'box' all I get is a screen split into two halves - top grey, bottom white. No photos at all!

(I hope this message appears, and apologies if the original one is in there, somewhere.)

100% understand where you're coming from as you'll know! I think the 'friending' may also deprive us of many conversations that could have happened on TLS itself, and where people, even if they didn't join, would be able to read the ideas exchanged.

I would have liked to see Carmen's contributions too, oh well.

Who knows? Perhaps this group will be even more dynamic as time goes on. We could have separate threads for reviews, for tips and links, and a general book talk + thread, plus being a little more friendly than the G allowed? Or something like that.

You’ve probably discussed all that already. I’ve been busy enjoying the days before lockdown by having an endoscopy and yet another trip to the optician. My eyes are struggling.

Well, all eyes on America. Whoever wins it will be a disappointment to know how much racism and sexism and pure greed have won, where economics are top and health issues near the bottom as quarter of a million people die of Coronavirus. People not deaths. Deaths is a nothing word. People dying gives meaning to death.

Hi Sara, look at the top menu bar (goodreads-->Home-->etc). Far right, you'll see your avatar. Third from the right is an email icon. Click there and see if you find the message.

message 142: by Hushpuppy (last edited Nov 08, 2020 06:25AM) (new)

Hushpuppy I have now also uploaded in the Photos the 6 pages of the TLS Who's who directory (https://www.goodreads.com/photo/group..., on the second page at the moment).

There is no way for me to embed them here unfortunately, and I do not think it is quite right to link to a google doc, postimage or else since this information has been given on the Guardian and on Goodreads, and that this is probably where it should stay. The Photos are also already made of bits and bobs from different threads, so this is not increasing entropy too dramatically. It looks very suboptimal, but it took already 6 hours to produce something that looks this ugly.

For some people, I have not been able to find their profile on the G, so I have put the default avatar, (Edit: and I have also made some educated guesses as to the pairings,) but please let me know if you'd like that changed (or anything else)! I will not update this directory with any new members. I will leave this to Llcoolj if she wants to take her time to create one of her spreadsheets instead.

No, feeling worse if anything, but this will not last forever (watching Borat 2 last night, with its Fertility Kazakh dance and its reference to Teeth, the horror film, has not helped!).
