John Reut | 2 comments Hi!

A friend of mine recommended to ask here so thats what ive decided to do!

I am currently looking for horror books of a specific kind that might not even exist but I figured if theres a place where people know what im looking for it surely mmust be around here.

I am desperate for highly psychological horror and to describe it I have an easier time thinking about what i dont want than what i do which makes it hard to find, im fully aware of it but i have some positives too so here goes:

The most important and main positive criterium is:
-the more surreal and mind bending the better.
- i love protagonists "feeling like they are going mad" or "questioning reality" type of stuff
-Also It should be set in current or close to current times; nothing earlier than 1990.
- it should at least be a bit supernatural (for example "house of leaves" kind of subtle supernatural, just not "rational")

What I dont want (dont judge I know some of these might seem silly to some of you):
-A Child/Children/teens as protagonists
-Gore
-Stephen King as author (I know most of his books)
-Serial killer/killer/murder focused
-technology focus
-alien focus

I am fully aware that this is a stupid request and if noone has any suggestions then I can very much understand, but I didnt wanna not give it at least a shot and ask.

Thanks for giving it a thought in any case.

Cheers.

Lora Milton | 202 comments You might want to check out author Austin Crawley. He does some pretty mind bending stuff. He's got a free short story at https://www.inkitt.com/stories/myster... and his book Letters to the Damned might suit you.

Luvtoread (Trying to catch up) | 1944 comments Have you read "The Need" by Helen Phillips? That book gets your mind spinning.

Btw, I love your first name, Lora, that is my daughter's name. :-)

This is a very good story. I believe it fits what you are looking for. It takes place in Canada. The protagonist is a Native Canadian American man who has tried to shun his roots and people's traditions. The Trickster is a supernatural entity that begins to kill people and the protagonist looks like he is the guilty one. He even begins to question himself because of black outs he has begun to experience.

I saw this book in a thrift store and had never heard of the author before. The cover really grabbed me and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

Thx for the question and I love psychological horror but it is hard to find well written ones for sure!

Well for questioning reality I recommend Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? It’s the book that the movie blade runner is based on....not a typical horror, actually classified as sci fi but definitely has psychological angst and an unknowing of what’s real and what is not feel to it.
I also really love Let the Right One In. It is from a child’s perspective, but the child is definitely an old soul and alone (and well I shouldn’t say anymore, but it’s definitely more horror based) so I think you could get past that. It has that feeling too of someone questioning what is real.

And my last one would be Never Let Me Go; again not a horror novel per se but a total mind twisting novel..

I just

Some of the books that have come up frequently are;
The Raw Shark Texts
The Supernatural Enhancements
John Dies at the End
Experimental Film
I'm Thinking of Ending Things
Slade House
I have only read the first 3, but they were all great.

Gina, you have a group! I've been trying to track down people who've read the book or who would read the book with me. Read the book -to ask the about it. Who would read the book -because I've tried reading it on my own and I couldn't 😔
