I read this book in 1987, and it looked like it was from the 1970's. A human and a sentient tiger-like alien called a Cynthian were stranded in space together and had to cooperate to get back to inhabited space. The Cynthian used mobile plant-creatures to do manual work, and the Cynthian would get frustrated and smash them. The Cynthian would then have to grow more of the plant-creatures. They eventually find their way to human space, where the Cynthian is regarded with wonder and suspicion.
