Amy | 12915 comments Nancy, I just saw you writing about the Chaperone, which I just mentioned in my reply to Karin's Klansman review! I will send you the article I talked about if you like. Did not know they were making that into something for screen, or already had!

message 53: by Jenni Elyse (last edited Oct 24, 2020 01:52PM) (new)

Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) I would've been fine with any of them, but I liked two of them more and this was one of them so YAY! I don't know what I'm going to pick yet as the possibilities are endless.

I recommend Dune by Frank Herbert. The current movies suck, but I'm optimistic about the new one coming out. And, it's my all-time favorite book. ★★★★★ + ♥︎

Great! I will open a thread for it next weekend!

Heather Reads Books (gothicgunslinger) | 859 comments Oh man, there's so many for me to choose from on this tag list. I think I'm going to try to get my hands on The Hate U Give (on my trim list, which I have been neglecting lately) and maybe also Thirteen Reasons Why. The latter keeps showing up on so many tag lists in previous months, I'm kinda sick of seeing it as a tbr option!

I grew out of YA long ago, so both of these books have been in my orbit for awhile but I tend to gravitate toward other things instead. Maybe if I make a concerted effort next month, I can get in the requisite headspace for it.

Dune for sure
Time Travelers Wife

I recommend listening to the audio. It worked perfectly for that story.

That's funny. First impressions can be so deceiving!

message 62: by Michael (new)

Michael (mike999) | 569 comments Great sets of recomendations.

To add some sci fi , the Expanse series, starting with Leviathan Wakes by Corey, Ching's Stories of Your Life and Others, and Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan, make for great reading. For fantasy, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Coraline, and Watchmen are outstanding.

For historical fiction, Wolf Hall and two sequels and The Last Kingdom and many sequels are satisfying reads.

For literary fiction with great movie versions, I recommend Olive Kitteridge, True Grit, and The Remains of the Day.

For what to read, I have so many TBR where a good movie made me lukewarm to book priority due to story being spoiled. Of these I will pick among The English Patient, Wonder Boys, High Fidelity, and Brideshead Revisited,

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12569 comments Thanks for bringing up The Last Kingdom, Michael. I had forgotten that it went to the screen and I have been meaning to get to it. Not sure I will, but I have put it on the list

DANG IT!!
I must've not noted that in my trim tbr list and I jumped the fun and read it last month 😫😭 That sucks... but I can still join in the discussion.

No one would've seen my review because I slacked and didn't even post a review.

Meli - write up and post to buddy read thread when I start it. But yes, you jumped tbe gun! I am looking forward to this as it has been on my mind to read it again as it has been a lot of years since last time. I have always loved it.

message 66: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11067 comments Theresa,

I'd love to join in to discuss Rebecca. Can we make it a real group read with spoilers allowed? There are some issues I'd love to dig into, especially about the beginning of the book, which takes place some time after the events in the book. (Is there a term for that?) I'd love to hear other opinions about what it means.

Great suggestions! The Olive Kitteridge mini-series made me appreciate the book even more than I already did.

I haven't read or seen Brideshead Revisited or Remains of the Day. I tried to start Remains of the Day several times, but something always stops me. I know enough about the story to know it will make me cry.

Absolutely! It is a classic after all. If someone doesn't want to read spoilers, they can wait to read the thread until read book...or see the movie.

That is great to know! I am looking forward to it. Malcolm X has been on my list for years because of Nicole D but it took a Fishbourne narration to make me finally get to it. lol

I read Dune earlier this year and I wholeheartedly second this nomination!! It was excellent. And the movie looks fabulous, though I know it got pushed back to 2021.

Wolf Hall continues to call to me from my bookshelf....

I just finished watching The Last Kingdom, and if the books are even half as engaging as the show they will be great reads!

Ah! I have the first one in print, but I may keep that in mind for the next two books. Or maybe I will just dive into the first book on audio....

message 78: by Ushashi (new)

Ushashi (ushashib) Hello everyone! I am going to jump in and join on this tag.

I was about to start Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith in November, and now I found out that it was adapted to screen by Hitchcock in 50's. So I will watch the movie too after reading.

If I manage to finish that and The Goldfinch (which I have been reading for quite some time now), I will try to read either The Namesake or Little Fires Everywhere.

message 79: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12915 comments Fabulous, Nancy! Can't wait to read it with you guys. Then we can watch the movie!

Hi Ushashi! I have long loved the Hitchcock adaptation of the Highsmith. Then last year I finally read the original. Do wait! It will be a fascinating comparisin, and selfishly, I have been dying to have a conversation with someone about the two.

I listened to all 3 on audio earlier this year. These books are perfect for audio.

That's a long road trip! Audio is wonderful for those extended rides. Hope you are traveling some place warm. I haven't read The Autobiography of Malcolm X yet, but an audio narrated by Fishburne sounds wonderful.

Daisy Jones & The Six is a great audio, if you haven't read it yet! (Even if it's not been made into a film...)

I am heading to Kansas City for a chunk of December to spend the holidays with my family. I go home every year, but I am not comfortable flying just yet, so a road trip it is!

Not someplace warm, but I haven't seen my family in a year so I am super excited about going!

Good for you! And a road trip sounds like a fine idea after so many months of restricted geography.

I agree! I think it will be nice to have a long drive with a good audiobook. The big decision will be choosing a book! LOL!

message 95: by Nicole D. (new)

Nicole D. | 1573 comments Has nobody mentioned Fight Club - though movie was better than the book.

I re-read The Thorn Birds in recent years, and was just as enamored of it.

Normal People TV show was great.

Who knows if I'll actually do a book to screen. (Maybe The Turn of the Screw) I'm tearing through books, but haven't been reviewing at all, which is why I've not been active. That has a lot to do with the fact that I've been listening to thrillers which don't really inspire me to write reviews.)

Speaking of thrillers, I just listened to this one and found it above average. Sometimes I Lie - Supposed to be book to screen, starring Sarah Michelle Geller, I didn't see the tag on the first few pages.

Anyway, we'll see where the month takes me.
