This is my first time reading King, or horror/suspense of any kind really. The first thing I'm noticing is how incredibly descriptive the prose is. Branding, physical positioning, whatever, King is going to paint the complete picture for you. All of that description really started to payoff in the scene where the mist rolls onto the grocery store. That moment in time where things go from "I'm a little uneasy" to "I'm freaking out and I'm justified in doing so" should be really hard to capture, but we've already been hit with so much detail that it isn't jarring to spend a couple pages on just a couple moments of story.
I'm enjoying this so far.
Thru 4 chapters and enjoying this. So far I don’t see it as horror or scary but suspense. King just has a way with words I can see, smell, feel the setting. I can even imagine the voices, accents, inflections and all that.
As for the story it is an every day context the first few chapters. It isn’t until people start going into the mist do we get a sense of the mystery. So far everyone is reading as expected in the store. Confused, worried about the unknown. Imagining what’s happening to those left behind. But maybe because of the crowded, hot store and long lines emotions are amplified.
And now to figure out those tentacles, and the mists inability to enter the store. Wonder what’s happening at the storm damaged homes with the busted out windows.

I'm willing to bet that his neighbor slept with his wife.
Also, umm, sorry Norm.
I'm liking this book. I'm even happier it's a short story. The word limit helps keep things moving.

I'm always impressed with the way King does NOT play around when it comes to getting to the action, while still doing a good job of setting the stage for the story. The Mist has continued in that same frame. It's packing even more of a punch with this being so short.
King's almost over-describing of everything really bothered me at the start of The Shining, but reading that book last year made me realize how much it draws the reader into the story. His tendency to give all. the. details. helps make it feel real. Which is probably why I gave up on The Stand. Too real. :)
I felt vaguely creeped out from the first page, but the tentacles? No, no, no. Just no. What a happy coincidence that 33% was right there and I could put it down. :)
