Thank you for this explanation. I really want proportional representation (sorry, I know I'm repeating myself!)

My early voting polling place is the same location as on Election Day. Usually the polling place has to accommodate 5 or 6 different districts. As they had to move our polling place because it was originally in a nursing home (not the best location during a pandemic, hmmmm?), I'm not sure if those 5 or 6 districts from the nursing home location are now smushed in with several others at the high school now designated. I'll be finding out.
I'm not sure in truth how bad the lines will be. I'm in the Columbia University, Manhattan School of Music, Union Theological Seminary, and Jewish Theological Seminary area, which of course are all closed and have been since March, to in person anything. It could actually be less crowded than normal.
My plan is to check it out on Saturday and just get it overwith. But if bad lines, I'll go durng the following week on a weekday.

Here's a WIKIPEDIA article about it.
It was used mostly in those states that were originally part of the Confederacy. BUT ... other states also had poll tax, including Connecticut, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. It was abolished in 1964 with the ratification of the 24th Amendment to the Constitution.
Does NZ have proportional representation? I really really want there here in Canada. Every vote would actually count for something and the parties would have to work together.
