SOLVED. Mystery/Thriller. A single dad detective is looking for a serial killer. [s]

So I’ve been trying to find this book for some time. I read it around nine years ago although I’m not sure when it was published, but possible from 2000 to 2011.
The book is about a detective who is looking for a serial killer. This detective has 3 sons, one of which is in highschool and seems to have a drug problem.
I remember there being a character who is a teacher with purple eyes, who soon becomes the love interest of the detective. She drives a mustang.
There was also a focus on a footballer highschool student who had a previous record with the police and his parents were able to cover it up.
One of the victims was a POC (Indian) cheerleader with long dark hair, she went on a date with the football player mentioned above (?) and was drugged by him in his car.

Would you call this a romantic suspense novel - or mostly a mystery/thriller?

I’m not sure but I think she passed away due to an illness if i’m not mistaken.
The victims were all young females and they didn’t have anything in common besides that which is why the killer was hard to track down.
The country the book was set in was the states.
I would classify it as mostly a mystery/thriller.
I also remembered something, there were chapters that were written in the killers POV.
