I read this book years ago (maybe around 2011-2013 time frame) on the app/website Wattpad and I believe it got very big and was removed from Wattpad to be published for real. It had like a ominous title and I feel like the title had 1 or 2 words in it. It was something like “One Horizon” or something like that.
Anyway it was about a man who kind of had a sucky/boring life and has this goofy but successful friend that ran a massive tech company. His friend gives him a free VR set that basically transported him into the virtual world that’s very realistic, you can feel, smell, taste everything. Like it feels like you’re actually in the world, almost like your consciousness has been uploaded into the game. He meets a girl and they slowly start to befriend, her name was like Kana or something to that end (although tbh could be also very wrong about that). In the game, they choose a class like a mage or swordsman. And I think the game was able to analyse you and choose your class for you based on your personality and the main character got a rare class or something like that. So he plays with Kana, the successful friend and some others. He previously wasn’t really a fan of VR/video games or at least just didn’t do much of it. But he slowly enjoys playing that games more and more and starts liking the probably Kana girl.
(BIG SPOILER AHEAD)
The story comes to a climax when he learns that Kana is not a real player and just a very advanced NPC and another NPC kind of goes rogue and blocks all real players in the server from being able to leave the game.
The rogue NPC I think like confesses her love for her creator (which is the really smart friend). That last part might not be completely accurate.
But turns out the creator (now that I think of it I feel like his name could be Dan) knew that this would happen and in fact programmed it to happen or something? He had some explained and logical reason for it but I can’t remember.
Any help would be appreciated. Even if some details from what I have said doesn’t match your thing, I’d love to hear it anyway as I could have jumbled up some details or just got some plain wrong. It’s been a good few years, I just remember being absolutely enthralled by the book and like finishing it in 1 day.
Thanks for any help :)
