Singing Patient | 18 comments I finally managed to quit drinking diet coke 2 1/2 years ago and i don't get migraines anymore. And my digestion is better. I knew I had to quit because I was totally addicted. It was the first thing I thought about when I woke up every day. Nutrasweet is like kryptonite for me. evil stuff. May as well stab myself in the kidneys. And regualr coke is so full of high fructose corn syrup, I may as well stab myself in the pancreas.
I LOVE soda, so it was not easy to quit. I drink seltzer to help with the fizz cravings and once in a while i have a zevia cola (sweetened with stevia, natural, no calories)

Félix (habitseven) Are you in the rain?

Coke Zero is supposed to be diet Coke for men. Polling showed that most men thought diet Coke was too feminine, but they were willing to drink a zero calorie cola, so Coke came up with sufficiently masculine packaging.

I've never tried Coke Zero but I am curious how different it is from diet Coke. I actually prefer the taste of diet Pepsi.

Singing Patient | 18 comments guess that "diet coke moment" commercial with the shirtless guy didn't win over the male population. except maybe the gay men. it's still nutrasweet, so i'm still not touching it.

message 58: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
Okay, that's helpful. Now I know I can never drink it because I loathe the taste of regular coke and pepsi. Uck, talk about noxious!

message 59: by Singing (new)

Singing Patient | 18 comments yeah i make tea at home, ice it, and carry it with me to work. the steel bottle says not to put carbonated water in it, so i can't even carry seltzer in, unless i keep a 12 ounce bottle and refill it...
you have to watch flavored seltzer. a lot of it has nutrasweet in it too.

message 60: by Phoenix (new)

Phoenix (phoenixapb) | 1619 comments Diet soda = toxic waste. Have you ever taken the time to smell a diet soda? There is something truly repulsive in there.

message 61: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Agreed. Alecia knows.

I've never smelled anything repulsive emanating from a diet soda.

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments I don't think I've tasted a diet soda since the '70s. It was a Tab. Have they gotten better since then?

I wonder what I would be like w/o Diet Coke. I drink about 3-5 per day, though occasionally I'll take a day or two off (not intentionally -- it just happens). Anyway...

I'm not the least bit sluggish, I don't get headaches, and my energy & attitude are generally "up."

If it's slowing me down, I think I'm happy for that.

message 65: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments caffeine can cause rebound migraine headaches. Diet sodas containing aspartame can trigger migraines. Look for diet sodas using splenda not aspartame. But all sodas contribute to osteoporosis. Unfortunately, tannic acid can also trigger migraines so for me it is strictly herbal teas/infusions. Citrus can also trigger migraines (for me it is orange juice). Dietary problems mean I spend a lot of time reading labels in grocery stores. Not my favorite reading.

Michael stephanie clarisse wrote: "also, fuck splenda. and shit like that."

I think I'm allergic to Splenda. I was drinking Aquafina flavored waters for awhile and my heart was skipping beats like crazy. I stopped drinking Aquafina and it got better and I blamed it on the Splenda.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I like fizzy, and when I'm out to eat, I'll occasionally get a root beer with pizza, or a Coke with Mexican food.

I don't like diet soda, but I do like Perrier and San Pellegrino, unflavored, and I get that sometimes at the grocery store.

Splenda is vile. I never minded aspartame, though.

message 69: by Jammies (new)

Jammies I like Diet Coke, but I have cut back. I have one 12 ounce can with my lunch, and drink a lot of water the rest of the day. I generally have 12 oz of decaf Diet Coke with dinner, and then it's back to water again. I figure I'm flushing the yucky stuff out of my system daily.

message 70: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Did you know that it takes THIRTY glasses of water to get your body back to a normal pH after drinking just ONE can of soda? That's a shitload of water.

message 71: by Jammies (new)

Jammies Heidi, I drink a LOT of water. I have a 15 oz. mug that I refill 8-10 times a day at work and a 16 oz. glass I refill another 3-5 times at home.

message 72: by Michael (new)

Michael That's a lot of water! I try and drink a gallon of water a day but I don't always make it.

I have a 20 oz water bottle that I refill about 3-4 times a day, but daaamn.

You're not diabetic, are you? I'm sincerely concerned.

message 74: by Jammies (new)

Jammies Nope, not diabetic, I just really like cold water. I usually empty my 22 oz water bottle during my 50 minute workout.

But I did just check, and my desk mug holds 12 oz, not 15.

I'll quit altogether with you if you want. :)

message 76: by Angie (new)

Angie I am a huge Mountain Dew drinker. 3 cans a day. I just went to the dentist (I go regularly) and had to have two cavities filed. I decided it was the Dew! So... I quit the Dew just like that. Some days I have one but man that stuff is soooooo good. I miss it.

message 77: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments 1)all soda drinks like coke, pepsi, mountain due...bad for women because they leech from the bones..older women with osteoporosis should avoid when possible. 2)caffeine is a drug and not good for people with anxiety issues or people with migraines as caffeine can result in a rebound migraine. sigh.

Mountain Dew is my poison of choice too. I'm trying to kick the habit, since I'm sure I'm not doing my teeth any favors and like Michele said, the caffeine is probably contributing to my constant headaches. Can't shake my morning coffee though, have to have that one little burst of caffeine or the whole day is a mess.

message 79: by [deleted user] (new)

Have you all tried Diet Dew?

Once, by accident. I can't stand diet soda.

I think I've probably drunk Mountain Dew 2-3 times in my life. I've never really been into the clear lemony-lime sodas (though if I were, I'd drink the diet version). I do really like lemon-lime flavored carbonated waters, and carbonated lemonades, just not the Sprite/Mountain Dew stuff.

Although - I went through a Fresca phase and I still like Fresca, I just don't drink much soda anymore period. I'm a water drinker.

Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin wrote that Fresca was the favorite drink of U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson, who had a button installed on the desk in the White House's Oval Office which would summon his military aide to bring the drink. Wiki

message 83: by Carol (new)

Carol | 1678 comments I kicked my Mt Dew habit last winter. Damn I love Game Fuel, Code Red, Typhoon, Voltage.... I cut down to two cans a day, but decided the caffeine might still be affecting my sleep patterns. Unfortunately I developed an immediate addiction to orange soda.

I don't like Splenda.

Angela~twistedmind~ (twistedmind) | 538 comments I don't know what is in Diet Mountain Dew, and quite frankly, my dears, I don't give a damn. Seriously, I'm addicted and drink it 90% of the time. Otherwise it's tea or carbonated water, or sparkling water for those who want to be la te da about it. As for Splenda, I've tried it in my coffee and my tea and it tasted very much like shit. I use the generic brand of Equal. I'm diabetic, though, so I have to use some artificial sweeteners whether I want to or not. I suppose all of my ailments would be cured if not for my excessive use of artificial sweeteners. Well, truthfully, some of them probably actually would be.

message 89: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Truthfully probably actually?

That sentence makes me dizzy.

Angela~twistedmind~ (twistedmind) | 538 comments Phil wrote: "Truthfully probably actually?

Sorry. I had a moment. I'll try to not let it happen again. But, truthfully, probably, actually it will.
