Sorry you didn't like it that much, but you have a good point; there wasn't a lot happening in this book, and it was more like a diary than a story...It is pretty slow, and maybe the only reason behind the hype was that it might have been slightly different from the normal, and that it was another book written by a well-known author.

I looooove the author, but I do feel like most of the hype was because of her and not that much about the book. I'm not saying the book is bad, but comparing to her other books, it's so different and definitely not one that I would recommend.

I'm happy for the people who loved it though. I hate reading books that don't make me feel good and excited and this one for me was so boring.

I read the Shades of Magic series when it launched and I gave it 4.5 stars, but I don't remember it AT ALL. Only a few concepts and characters. I want to read it again soon! Hope you like it :)

I absolutely LOVED this book!!! I really felt Addie's life, both in 1714 France, through the salons in France, to modern day New York City. She wanted to live life, and she really got that chance - at a price. After making a deal with the devil, she finds herself immortal but no-one can remember her, until she meets Henry. She doesn't understand why but finds out later and it was no shock to me. Great storytelling which is typical of V.E. Schwab. Love, Love, Love this book.

I'm so intrigued! The forgetting thing reminds me a bit of one of my favourite films, Kimi no Na Wa :D

Seems like this book is very divisive, I've seen some people on my feed who absolutely loved it and some who were extremely disappointed so I'm not going to go into it with too many expectations. (Obviously I hope that I'll think it's awesome though)

Wow, I have a feeling that this story is going to be very personal for me, it's already hitting too close to home 😅

Being forced into a marriage I don't want (not to mention the kids the come with it) with no way out is literally my worst nightmare and I wouldn't be thinking straight either.

I consider myself very lucky to have been born in a time and country where women can choose to be completely independent if they wish, even if much of society still looks down upon such a choice. (hide spoiler)]

Halfway through this book I was thinking how weird it was that Henry is a main character just as much as Addie but barely gets mentioned in any of the promo material and assumed that it was because V. E. Schwab wanted to avoid spoilers or something? But now it all makes sense, very clever! I've read quite a few books that end by revealing that the book itself was written by the a character within the book, but I especially like how this one was handled.

I absolutely loved the ending, it was beautiful and hopeful but without feeling too naively idealistic and I totally disagree with the people who I've seen who said the story dragged, I'm rarely this sucked into a story.

I'm so happy that I ended up loving this book! I shouldn't have doubted V. E. Schwab :D (hide spoiler)]

I think Addie represents so many women at the time (and some today) who had no way to escape and were expected to marry. I think her father had sympathy for her and wanted more for her, but didn't know how to provide it, which makes it sadder. The part in the forest would have been terrifying. The deal she made makes this so much more interesting. I mean, can you ever not want your soul? I'm so hooked now. (hide spoiler)]
