I hated this book, but it was short and I finished it for a reading game. I don't plan to ever read this author ever again. There are only two likable characters in this book, and there are quite a few whose details and POV are shown. If it wasn't bad enough that they are unlikable, this is the start of a series about the boy (likable), Patrick, but his father is a horribly cruel man who is a misanthrope in general, but cruel and abusive to his son. I hate, hate, hate reading about child abuse (of course I know it happens IRL) and had I known just what was going to happen, I'd have never started this book.

It hardly matters how well an author can write when they write this sort of book, for me. I have already btdt with reading dark books about nasty, decadent people over the years and what I should have done was read more of the reviews first.
