How does a greatward work?

Please help.. I'm currently reading final chapters of The Daylight War and I've forgotten how Greatwards work.

the grear ward works by repelling anything with higg concentrations of magic in them it sort of pushes them away while draining their magic i believe

oh, so how did they make it? and how is it different from the regular wards they place around their homes? .

the great ward is just a giant ward of forbidance formed by the streets and buildings it works like any other ward but on a massive scale
