Aaron Jesko Hi!

My name is AJ and I am a bookaholic. I hardly ever leave a bookstore without buying something. And I never leave my place without a book.
I am excited to have found this group.
My favorite thriller authors are Joseph Finder, Andrew Grant and Lee Child.

I am looking forward to discussing books and exchanging recommendations.

Best,
AJ

Bill Welcome to the group, AJ. I'm the same when it comes to bookstores. Love them and love visiting new ones. Enjoy yourself here.

Wendy | 581 comments I had a used book habit. I realized I had a problem when my collection was boxed up in a move... 25 file boxes, aprox 150-200 paperbacks. I now limit myself to the library & following certain authors or competing a set. I simply did not have the room or strength to continue to accoumulate.

I have two closets full of books. In addition to the bookcases in almost every other room.

Aaron Jesko Thank you all for the warm welcome!

I really have to keep an eye on this book-addiction. I have long run out of space on my shelves. More book cases is not an option because I don't have enough space in my apartment. The books are piling up everywhere, except for the kitchen (too many smells) and the bathroom (too damp).
Since I moved here my collection of books has nearly doubled. Next time I move I am going to need even more boxes and it is going to involve a lot of legwork carrying those boxes down four floors. The things you do for the love of books...!

a very belated welcome, AJ.

I feel your book pain: "Since I moved here my collection of books has nearly doubled."

When I moved to where I am now (8 years ago), I had to leave a huge part of my library behind (I gave away literally hundreds of boxes of books) because the books were the biggest part of our moving cost and well, that did not sit well. So for the last eight years, I've been overcompensating for my loss and the shelves have overflowed since.

I am okay with giving away a couple of books that I know I won't read again. But I don't know if I could give away entire parts of my library.
That must have been really hard for you.

I have heard people talk about throwing away books they don't need anymore.
That's something I absolutely don't approve of. *!*
In my opinion, you can resell them, donate them, give them away for free. But you don't ever throw books away! (Unless they are infested with black mold or something.)

I posted about the books on Freecycle, and a book lover took all of the boxes. I was beyond okay with that.

Nice.
It's a comforting thought to know your books are going to a place where they will be valued.

Yes it is. That's why when I have crime/mystery novels to give away, I'll always post them in a thread here before they go elsewhere.

Jan C (woeisme) | 39173 comments My library recently posted that they were interested in receiving books - either for their collection or to be sold in their now quarterly (used to be annual) book sale. Proclaimed by a local newspaper as one of the best book sales in Chicagoland.

If you give me an address, I'll send them some. I have five big bags of books to give away.

AJ, my young, strong nephew and older sister helped me move...they were less than thrilled with my addiction. And that was AFTER I did a cull.

Years ago, I had a Ranger Rick's Magazine collection - my Dad kept renewing the subscription years+++ after I grew out of them. (About 8-9 years worth). I donated them all to the Children's Receiving Home ("orphanage"). I wanted to donate my books to our US Military. For security reasons they require you do "apply" and get a sort of background check before you can donate. So that was out. I finally gave them to the library.

You found them a new home where they would be valued and not forgotten. That's what counts.

Kim Hathorn | 11 comments My local library system has a used bookstore in which they sell discarded library books and donated books--the proceeds of which go to procure new books for the (library) collection--and they also sometimes have other programs in which they collect books for, such as for U.S. military and their families. Right now, my library is collecting books for a literacy program at a local prison. When I finish a book that I own I usually give it to the local library, unless it's a discarded library book that I bought from them. In that case I give it to a thrift store, because I was told that the library can't accept their books back once they are discarded.
If anyone wants to get rid of books, those are all good options. I don't believe in just throwing books away either unless they are damaged.

Smart.
There is a lot of good coming out of programs like this.

I think I threw away a book only twice in my entire life. In the first case it was an old book that smelled so badly I had get rid of it.
The other time I think it was a book that had outdated information that would have been of no further use.
I remember how bad I felt afterwards, though.

Oh my... water damage is always nasty... but it is especially upsetting when it happens to books (and clothing for that matter); it's truly a sad sight...

Hi Frances! Welcome!
Good to meet a fellow Finder-reader! =)
I really admire Finder for his writing style. His writing is so balanced: fluent when it has to be, rough around the edges when required.
When I pick up one of his books I can't put it down; I have to keep reading until I have finished it. (If my schedule allows it.)
