Tony Ball | 6 comments I read this book years ago - I believe it was published in first half of 1970's. The story starts with the crash in full detail as the investigators begin their work with the recovery of the tape recorder from the cockpit , and carries on through the reconstruction of the bits and pieces as Klein , the chief investigator for the NTSB ends up flying an identical plane over the same route to try and recreate the events that led up to the crash.

It has a really good coverage of how the NTSB Enquiry teams work.

It's been a very long time since I read it.....probably not - but can you rule out Airport by Arthur Hailey?

Hi - thanks for replying, but it is not Airport - which deals with an aircraft taxing off the runway, another plane with a bomb, but does it from the perspective of the Airport Manager and team. The book I am think about is a major crash, and the following investigation via NTSB.

Tony, where was the airplane traveling from and to? Where did the crash occur? Any survivors?

Ingo (ilembcke) | 669 comments This one was filmed, but is from 1983, so probably too late, and also it is SF. Just to throw it in and maybe rule it out.
Millénium by John Varley Millénium

The books also has a Wikipage

Kris, from memory it was a new airliner, flying from one American city to another. About 400 plus lost, no survivors, but I do remember a box of turtles in cargo actually surviving.

Ingo, the crash was only one place, not a mid-air collision. However, thanks for suggesting this one - it looks interesting, and I might well get a copy to read.

Bargle | 1762 comments I thought maybe it was the book that was the basis of the movie "Fate is the Hunter", but it seems the movie is very different from the book.
