I read this sometime in the 2010s. Magic users were referred to as Sentients and there was a woman who had either some eye or an eye like object in their forehead. There was a scene where she was about to be executed and someone remarked that her gaze could literally kill. The main character wanted to become some sort of person associated with the medical profession: an apothecary or healer or something like that.

I actually can't figure out the intended audience from memory. Cover: white with some sort of coloured circle or semi circle. I think it was part of the series with the colour of the circle changing. There were other illustrations too probably that I cannot recall. Setting: Fantasy world unrelated to our own
