I read this story 30 years ago - I suspect it was written in the 50's era. It was in a compilation novel of science fiction short stories. From what I remember the plot was a man who travelled in a spacecraft to the moon but he also went back in time. He landed and a floating gas filled creature captured him and lifted him up with a sticky tentacle. He was able to escape but fell into poisonous thorns and was fatally wounded . A telepathic snake like creature who was the last of her kind used its life force to save him and they were pursued by robot like creatures

Glad you found your book, Iain. Do you recall which book you read that contained "The Moon Era"?
