NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11113 comments Ruth Bader Ginsburg just died at the age of 87. She was such an impressive and inspiring woman. She did so much for women's rights and for our democracy. Rest in Peace.

l think she must have fought very hard to hang on as long as possible this year, knowing what was at stake for the balance of the Supreme Court.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11113 comments I just downloaded the Notorious RBG

message 3: by Jenni Elyse (new)

Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) I just saw that she passed away. It truly is a sad day. She was quite a woman and is someone I definitely look up to.

Sadly, this is ill-timed. Now, we’re not just voting for a president but for a supreme justice as well. I really hope Trump doesn’t win so someone decent replaces RBG.

RIP, Justice Ginsburg.

Theresa | 15655 comments This is a blow felt deeply. RBG was a tower of strength, everything one could desire in a justice, bigger than life.

Jen K | 3160 comments Such an amazing woman who did so much for this country. I'm truly gutted.

message 6: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tstan) | 1261 comments I'm so saddened by this! RBG was a pioneer in law, and dedicated her life to protecting the laws of the USA. If only there were more like her.

message 7: by Booknblues (new)

Booknblues | 12148 comments They will let Trump replace Ginsburg before he is out of office. McConnell has already said.

This is so sad.

I don't know how they could get away with that, since they didn't allow Obama to do it back in 2016, It was a lot earlier in the year I think - perhaps June?

If that happens, I'll join a demonstration in front of McConnell's house.

I was wondering about that - if they would be able to (or have to) wait.

Scalia died in February 2016 ... nearly 10 months before the election, and 11 months before the next president would be inaugurated.

Total hypocrites to say they'll confirm the Orange Man's nominee before the election (or even post election but before next presidential term.

As sad as I am about RBG, perhaps this is the catalyst that people need to wake them up to the danger of re-electing the incumbent.

I hope you're right BC, but I'm afraid it will move more swing voters to the right. As much as they might not like the orange man, they want to maintain control of the court.

message 12: by Jenni Elyse (new)

Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) Ugh! God help us all if Trump and McConnell appoint someone new before the election.

message 13: by Booknblues (new)

Booknblues | 12148 comments They are going to try. A few republican senators have said they will respect her wishes and point out to what was done with Obama.

We will see if they stand tough. I've read it was Murkowski of Alaska, and Susan Collins of Maine and we've seen them pretend to be tough before.

message 15: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5805 comments What else can go wrong in this horrible year? Some people urged her to resign while Obama was president, but she felt she was still useful and probably was sure Trump wouldn't win and she could retire under the next president.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12643 comments I laid down early last night so only just found out. My first reaction was wanting to hug Nicole R-we all know RBG was her hero.

May she rest in peace. We can only hope the Senate will honor her words and wait. It would be a dishonor to her and a sham.

message 17: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Awww, thanks Joanne. It has been a rough evening and morning for me for sure. But, I had Zoom breakfast with my amazing group of female friends and we talked about RBG and actions we are going to take (donate, write postcards, make calls, etc.) Taking action definitely makes me feel better!

And, I am trying not to forget to celebrate her amazing life. She was quite simply a once in a lifetime figure. I don’t want the politics of the day to completely overshadow that.

message 18: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15655 comments We needed her these last 4 years, and given what the Senate did in Obama's final year over SCOTUS appointment, just as well she did not retire then.

The sun is shining here in NYC on a beautiful day. For me that is RBG telling us to put aside the tears and fight on. She did.

message 19: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12953 comments What a legacy that we can all continue to shine forth.

On the other concern, Biden will increase their number of judges and make sure we have a balanced court. Or decent republicans will stand up for a deteriorating democracy. There are smart people on this, and this new era is moving forward towards the light.

Absolutely. I think we need to think of what she was all about and her legacy, in a kind of moment of silence.

I wish everyone would do that Trump, McConnell and Graham included.

message 21: by Sallys (new)

Sallys | 694 comments As horrible as everything seems I feel that we have to remain positive and hang on to any glimmer of hope that we can. I keep telling myself that there are still enough good people around to keep our democracy safe.

Margie, the link leads to an error message "sorry, this content is unavailable right now". I wonder if the settings are set to private?
