This request is for one of my son's friends, who is 17, hence some of the details are a little vague.

This is a medieval fantasy series comprising 5-7 books. It might be YA, it might be adult; it was read within the last 3 years

I don't know what is "spoilery" so I've hidden everything just to be on the safe side. There's nothing here that looks like a spoiler to me though.

The MC is in jail for killing a prince. MC is asked why he killed the prince, and says that to explain that, he must tell his life story from childhood onwards.

The MC has an "art"? that he can use to make himself more powerful.

The MC saves a kidnapped child at some point in the proceedings.

The MC visits various "ministries". One is medical, where he falls in love with a girl. Another is "stabby-stabby".
