This isn't really a mystery, but enjoy reading! For a second, I thought she could actually see me. I had gone down the ladder of a sewer hole keeping faith in an old myth, which promised gold. I wasn't relying on it too much, but it was the only hope I could cling on to.
After many days of prosperity in the 21st and 22nd century, the 23rd one had lead to the dark days of the Second Great Depression. We were one of the poorest families there were. Living in the corners of old hurricane shelters we were nothing to the outside world. But for me, my older sister, Ava and our Grandpa, Steve, we were always relying on each other to survive the outside heat. Every since the rich people had left Earth to live on Mars, we were crippled and couldn't move a step forward in technology.
Since the age of 3—for 12 years—I had been thinking that I could leave this life and move to Mars. Ava had always been telling me that leaving Earth wasn't the right thing to do, and there were better things we could do. She said I'd find out as I grow up, but I never understood what she meant. All I knew was that I wanted to go to Mars and I needed the gold for it.
When I had descended down that dingy chamber, All I had with me was a lantern, an old map that my grandpa has given him, and something called cookies. Grandpa insisted that they tasted great, but as I pulled them out from my pocket, I didn't think they did. They were brown circles coated with cones that grandpa called chips. I put them back into my pocket, sinking deeper into the cellar. My stomach grumbled as I kept on going, but the noise dissolved in the crunching of plastic bags beneath my feet.
I was used to hunger and to make those cookies of good cause, I didn't have a bite. I crouched down to crawl into another part of the chamber, and then I was there. I saw a girl with long brown hair already exploring the chamber. Who was she? I had no idea. As she turned her head to see another part of the room, I froze in place. I thought that she could see me, but she swiftly went back to exploring with her candle. I paused, wondering if I should confront her or not. I had been through enough to know that anyone whom you meet can be deadly. I peeked over and cast a quick glance at her to see if she had any weapons. She was unarmed. I was doubting myself about approaching her but I got the courage to walk over. She heard me and turned back, alarmed.
'Who are you?' she asked pointing her candle at me. I raised my hands in a sign of peace. 'I'm Alex and I don't want to fight.' She looked tense at first but she introduced herself. 'I'm Alicia.' she replied. I discovered that she knew about the treasure and she was looking for it too. Both out maps were similar and I thought I had a good lead on the situation until she said, 'From the point where this map ends, no one knows the route' My mind raced, and I looked at her in shock.
I am a bit busy so the next person can finish this. Have fun!
