That is a fabulous line, Lee!! I love that you occasionally read Dickens aloud. I do that sometimes too, it's great to see I'm not alone in that

Yes, he did! He used to stand in front of a mirror and "act it out". His daughter Mamie describes him doing this in My Father As I Recall Him when he had forgotten that she was there "asleep" on the settee in his study.

Oh yes! I'm so glad you enjoyed it Lee! I think it's brilliantly observed and what a great tip about reading out loud.
Of course Charles Dickens's bitter irony about the due process in Law had reached new heights in Bleak House, but you're right in that this does not deserve to alway be is in its shadow in people's minds!
