Tolkien describes absolutely everything in detail and summarizes nothing. It's a masterpiece, but it leaves nothing to the imagination.
When does the discussion start?
This is our February BOTM, so usually people start reading on or around the first of the month and discuss throughout the month. People do post before and after the month though, so feel free to start whenever you'd like to. Please be sure to use spoiler tags. We don't want to ruin anything for members that haven't read it yet.
February is good. Thanks Kristie.
I need to revisit this book. I read it back in public school, and could not appreciate it fully. I remember finding it rather dull, and disliked the amount of songs throughout. I love the movie though, so I definitely need to try it again now that I am older.
I remembered that I started reading this quite a few years ago and apparently I got relatively far... I just found a bookmark around page 100, huh.But I'll start from the top again as I can't remember what I read - besides it all got mixed with the movies, since I've seen them quite a few times since I got the books.
But as Maggie said, I remember that at least the beginning was rather dull with the many detailed descriptions and such.
I´m not currently reading this but I have read the whole saga three times (I think, two times in finnish and one in english). I first read it when I was 12 or 13 years and I have loved it ever since. Somehow I haven´t noticed that Tolkien would describe everything so detailed there is no room for imagination. But since I´m a big fan, my judgement might not be that good :)
I really enjoyed this saga when I read it about 20 years ago then I saw the movies and to me, they're so much better than the books. I'm sure Peter Jackson is a Tolkien fan and he created a masterpiece.
I was really afraid when I heard there was going to be movies about LotR since usually I think that movies can´t never get to the level of a great book. And in my opinion they couldn´t but they are pretty good. They were surprisingly good I must admit. But still they are pretty hollywood and don´t get all the essence of Tolkien´s ideas and mind. But who could resist Viggo ;)
I actually read it last week for this month, but I'll confess it's not my type of read. It's good to have officially off of my to read list though.
I am currently reading it :)I watched the movies, but never read the books because back then I thought they were boring. Anyway I decided to read it now to see if the books are better than the movies (in case of Hobbit the book was soooo much better imho).
Going to start properly reading it this week. I've read through the bits leading up to the first chapter already but not the actual story itself.

Book Summary
(The Lord of the Rings #1)
Frodo Baggins knew the Ringwraiths were searching for him - and the Ring of Power he bore that would enable Sauron to destroy all that was good in Middle-earth. Now it was up to Frodo and his faithful servant Sam to carry the Ring to where it could be detroyed - in the very center of Sauron's dark kingdom.
