Marina | 8 comments I thought that this was one of the first books I bought on my kindle, which I got in 2010- it appears not to be, but I probably read it around then. The setting is based on Ancient Greece and I believe there is magic done in relation to weaving though I don't believe this was very important to the book.

The protagonist is a spy, or is sent as a spy, to a place where slaves escape to. She is free but her mother was a slave. I believe the person she was working for was her father or she suspected was her father or something like that. Early in the book he sets her up to be raped in order to make her more believable as someone who's been a slave (though she may not figure out it was deliberate until later). he somehow ends ups with another woman whose name may have been Mara or something similar (and who maybe is her sister?), and they manage to run away and make it to the place the protagonist was supposed to spy on . There are horses that are important, I think. They're there for a while and get tested by the group to see whether they're learning to think like people with autonomy- at one point they find berries and bring them back instead of eating them themselves because they realized it was a test but then admit that. The protagonist has a harder time with this than the woman who was formerly a slave and one of the leaders of the community talks to her about having been a free woman (I think an elite warrior of some kind) and still needing to learn these things when she came here.
