I'm a huge Jimmy Stewart fan, so I've seen most of his westerns, but I'd much rather spend a few hours with his Capra-corn or Hitchcock films if I got to choose.

Me too ! Jimmy Stewart is one of my favorite old-time actors. The Philadelphia Story, Mr Smith goes to Washington, It's a Wonderful Life, The Shop Around the Corner, Winchester 73, Rearview Mirror, Vertigo, Harvey...so many timeless classics. And then there's Carey Grant in...oh but don't get me started x)

As to Jimmy Stewart, it was actually western director Anthony Mann who made Stewart discover and display the full range of his abilities as an actor. In the five famous Mann-Stewart westerns, Stewart took a step away from the gentle, humane, likeable character he typically impersonated in the Capra movies but also in other films he starred in before the 50s. That's one of the reasons why I love those Mann films so much. As it happens, I, too, am a huge fan of Stewart's.

I haven't seen all of Anthony Mann's films (have you, Tristram?) but I remember really enjoying some of his ventures into the noir genre, such as T-Men and Raw Deal. During the lockdown I watched The Tin Star and found Henry Fonda's performance particularly good in that one.

In fact, I have seen most of Mann's films - some few, especially the early musicals - are missing on my list. If you like Mann, I'd like to recommend the Mann book by Jeanine Basinger to you.

You've seen so many movies I'm not sure when you find time to read.

Kim,

Since we don't have a garden, a lot of work is spared me there, which means more time for reading or for my kids. I often set aside Saturday nights for movies unless my wife and I go out, which - surprise, surprise - we aren't doing so much right now. Other people go sailing, paint, tame panthers or play golf - I read and watch movies and like thinking about it all.

Bobbie | 341 comments While we are on movies, I have to mention my love for Robert Mitchum, I forgot to mention him on my list earlier. My mother loved him and she got me started watching old movies on TV with her when I was just a tween. I just bought a new unopened DVD of Night of the Hunter, a favorite of mine, in our library shop. We just opened up again, with precautions, and we are selling DVDs for 3 for $1.00 right now. What a deal!

Your son would be the one taming panthers, I can see him doing that. Especially when he knows you want to help him with his homework. :-)
