Tyler the Creator has presented his fans with a number of alter egos in his albums and IGOR takes on the theme of Tyler's love life. This was something his fan's hadn't seen before; they only came to discover that Tyler was gay from his previous album, and his albums before that included songs that would make people think that Tyler would never reveal a vulnerable side of him, something like his love life.
Each song on the track list covered a different part of the story of Tyler's love for a boy who wasn't really interested in him. The first part of the album demonstrates Tyler falling in love (EARFQUAKE, I THINK, EXACTLY WHAT YOU RUN FROM..., RUNNING OUT OF TIME, NEW MAGIC WAND, & A BOY IS A GUN) while the second part of the album demonstrates his realization that he should move on (PUPPET, WHAT'S GOOD, GONE,GONE/THANK YOU, I DON'T LOVE YOU ANYMORE, & ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?).
After the first two songs on the track, Tyler is coming to terms with the fact that he is starting to love somebody, but he is getting no response from the other party. We see lyrics in the third song of the first part "running out of time to make you love me." In the next song, Tyler states that he "need[s] to get her out the picture," showing a dark theme of wanting to get rid of the girlfriend of the man he loves. He ends part 1 with the lyric "I'ma leave us as friends 'cause the irony is I don't wanna see you again." Part two focuses on Tyler opening his eyes to the relationship that he has with this other man. He learns to move on, but wants to stay platonic, asking "are we still friends?"
