**Spoilers** i read this book many years ago, i’m 90% sure it was about a detective who lived in a sprawling city. but unlike normal cities where when they need more room the advance out, this city is built upwards. (i remember that being something mentioned on the back of the book cover) the rich live at the top while the poor live at the bottom. i vaguely remember the ending. the main character is able to save the city but he has to be strapped to a machine that sucks his life force out and leaves him a vegetable.

yes it it adult fiction, i read it around 2012 - 2015
no that’s not it, i remember it was published in the 2000s. probably around 2010
