Barbara (boingboing) | 13 comments Hi, I hope somebody can help.
I requested an audiobook and have found - after about 45 minutes - that I just cannot take any more. It's supposed to be satirical (which I conclude means a type of book that leads you to repeatedly ask yourself "Is this REALLY supposed to be funny?" but it's also very sweary.

I can't face another 7 hours of a narrator flinging the n-words and mother-f-er etc at me. Somehow when it's on the page, I find it easier to just scoot past the swearing but on an audio it's just too in-your-face.

So I'm wondering, do I force myself to plod on for many more hours of feeling thoroughly uncomfortable, or do I just not leave a review? And if I don't leave a review, will it count horribly against my statistics and my chances of getting more books (Recently, I have been getting most of the ones I have asked for).
Thanks in advance
Barbara

MissBecka Gee (missbeckagee) | 31 comments When it's a book I just can't take anymore I leave a review with just that.
"Too much/not enough of ..." and that I had to DNF as a result.
Then you are leaving a review, but also letting them know you didn't finish it. That way it doesn't impact your numbers and they get something from ya.
Hope that helps :)

Barbara (boingboing) | 13 comments Thanks Miss Becka, that sounds fair. I don't think I'd want to share the review elsewhere though.

Good answer😊 I usually also add that “In fairness to the author and because I didn’t finish the book, I will not be publishing this review to any purchasing sites”. However to be fair to my Goodreads friends and followers, I do publish a review here stating why I did not finish a book

Vivienne (vivienneor) My approach is the same just be honest regarding the reason. If the explicit language is too much or you just didn’t find it funny it’s valid feedback.

I also tend to note on my NetGalley feedback that I won’t publish to commercial sites. I do post to Goodreads again stating the DNF.

Robin (ukamerican) | 38 comments Why do you have to finish a book to review it? If you hate it enough to stop reading/listening to it, then you're entitled to explain in a review why you hated it enough to stop reading/listening to it. That should be valuable feedback for publishers, authors, and other readers alike.

I have been approved for 837 books since I joined NetGalley in 2014 - of which I did not finish 123. I always publish reviews good or bad explaining the reason for my review - who knows my pet hate may be the thing you love most about a genre.

I know when I read TripAdvisor reviews I am judging the reviewer as much as the place being reviewed - the same is true of book reviewers. If I hate all the books you love then my 1 star review is probably an autobuy for you (and vice versa).

Also, in my opinion, people who only ever seem to write four or five star reviews don't inspire confidence in their independence - I prefer to read a review which pans a book than one which gushes about it.

But that's just me.
