ABANDONED. A historical book probably read c.2004. Aimed at YA but adult main characters. Period/setting perhaps Viking? Female main character. Spoilers ahead.

The main character marries a man and they settle in a remote cabin/hut somewhere in Northern Europe (possibly to hide from the bad guy?). She goes into labour with their first baby while sitting in a stream/pool and yells at the husband about how he just put the baby in her, it's her who has to get it out, thinking to herself that all women in labour probably yell such things at their partners. The baby's a girl. When she's a toddler they have a boy – the mum has him in the cabin and tries not to make too much noise so as not to wake the daughter. They get found by the bad guy and she escapes (by ship?) with the children but the husband is killed. I think it ended with her with the grown-up daughter at sea (literally) looking back on the husband's death.
The book seemed recently published when I read it in paperback from the school library (England, in English) c.2004. I think the cover showed an illustration of the main character against the sea, perhaps on a ship. I think the author was female.
