This is about a family. The father is abusive. There are 2 sons. One son handles the abuse by travelling to an alternate universe. i know there is way more to the plot but that is what sticks out in my mind. I would like to read this again but can't find it. I read this book probably 20 years ago. I think it is by Stephen King but could be Dean Koontz.

This sounds a bit like The Bad Place by Dean Koontz.
