Wee Free Men tells the story of Tiffany Aching, a nine-year old girl who wants to save her spoiled, candy-loving baby brother from the Elf Queen. She also discovers that she has inherited her late grandmother's mantle as a witch. With the help of the Nac Mac Feegles, a drunken, foul mouthed, and moderately insane group of fairies, Tiffany embarks on a quest to get her brother back.
The Nac Mac Feegles are blue-skinned pictsies who are six inches tall and rush about, ready to lend a hand or headbutt, depending on the situation. Another member of Tiffany's group is the helpful Mr. Toad who is also educating Tiffany with helpful and sarcastic commentary.
I don't read much Terry Pratchett but thought this was a delightful, imaginative story that will appeal to both the young and young at heart. Wee Free Men is a wonderfully crafted and brilliantly funny adventure. I can see why so many readers admire him and look forward to reading more by this wonderful author.
