ABANDONED. Adult Fantasy, an apprentice wizard where wizards are not considered cool, fights with a huge knight over dragon eggs

Adult fantasy which I read in the 90s in English. Book is quite thick and has at least 300 pages. I think the author was male. It's set in a different world, in which wizards are rare and not believed in or are considered a negative influence. The wizard apprentice becomes his own man, after in the beginning some kind of healing a sick man episode with his old teacher. Later we encounter the adversary, a huge knight, who tries to steal or hatch dragon eggs. The wizard must stop him. I also remember him sneaking up on the dragon nest. Please help
