I’m looking for a children’s book that I read in the early 2000s (probably 2003-2007).
It was illustrated, with a Roald Dahl-ish level of reading ability required.
Setting was definitely non-western, but not sure where exactly. Potentially India?
The plot involved a demon/witch/evil woman-esque creature kidnapping the family of a young mouse to eat them. From my memory, it was pretty dark/creepy.
The mouse had some adventures on the way to rescue its family, which included: - Meeting a woman who has a really long neck and paints the sky using a paintbrush between her teeth. - Meeting a group of beautiful butterflies (think this chapter was called something like "Dance of the Light Brigade")
Any help finding it would be greatly appreciated as I’ve been looking for it for years!
