So at this point in the book (after completing Part Three essentially), I decided that the way to look at The Vanishers was as Film Noir or as Noir Fiction. I found it useful to think of this book as an artfully shot black and white film. After that, the cognitive dissonance that the book's peculiar mix of elements raised in me dissipated and I decided that the psychic elements were mostly 'color'.
