Week #3: Option 1: Read a book with an MC whose first name is less than 6 letters long
Bookcover/link: The Fantastic Fluke by Sam Burns
Rating (1-5): 3.5 stars
Review: Sage has had a rough go of it. His mother was murdered by his step dad right in front of him & he was almost killed by him as well. His bio dad, who never wanted him, does step in & take him after the death, but treats him like shit. He worked with his dad in his bookstore making minimum wage and doing all the work. His dad dies, that is where we start this story, leaving him the bookstore. For me there were some things that I would have liked tightened up. Sage eats PB&J and Ramon Noodles because they are cheap & he doesn't have a lot of money. His housing is set as he inherited his mothers home, which apparently was paid off, but he is rather broke. Why didn't he meet with his dad's lawyer & accountant to see where the shop was at? If it was way in the black then he could afford something other then what he mainly ate during the story. Now it wouldn't really have bothered me, but he mentions numerous times how broke he is & that he should meet with them, but never does. Also, when he finds Fluke, he immediately dismisses him as his familiar. Yes I know he was raised to believe that he is only a level 2 social mage, but if Fluke was someone else's familiar then he would have gone off to find them. So the not accepting what was right in front of his eyes went on a little too long IMO. I figured out one of the bad guys, but not the other. There really wasn't anything that jumped out at me on why they were, it was because I didn't like them. So, if it turned out they weren't, I wouldn't have apologized cause I still didn't like them :) Once the issue with Gideon was resolved, we don't really get any page time as it's the end of the book. So, I'm glad that there will be another book in the series so we can spend some time with Sage & Gideon.

Review-I loved the book, I loved the male MC Malachy. He was sweet, kind, considerate of Rory and her feelings. I loved the setting and the descriptions of the settings. Made me wish I could visit a small town in Ireland. I want to see the green rolling hills and visit a small village pub and walk on cobblestone roads. The relationship was rocky most of the time. I also liked the side character Ashton Richards who is the singer that Mal is writing songs for. Ashton is going through his own troubles and has a secret agenda all his own and it makes life interesting for Rory and Mal. Good book. I really enjoyed it.

The Mysterious and Amazing Blue Billings by Lily Morton
Pages: 301
Qualification: Precis Blue Billings is edgy, beautiful, and lost.
Read: 9/20/20
Rating: ★★★★

Lily Morton books comes out and I am all over that. Ghost stories aren't usually my thing but I was looking forward to this one. Not as hilarious as other books by the author but still had funny bits. Loved Blue even though my heart broke for the boy guy and warmed up to Levi eventually. Secondary cast of characters was great as well. Especially loved cranky bookstore owner Tom. Some evil ghosts, some friendly ghosts, just a lot of fun with a bit of a creep factor.

excerpt from blurb:
Los Cerros is Detective Ray Branigan’s town, his to protect in a way that satisfies his werewolf instincts

read: 09/21/20

review:
Don´t know what to think about this book. On one hand the MC´s are adorkable and on the other I don´t like their miscommunication and that the whole story is woven around that not talking. The scene in the hospital irked me too as suddenly we get a flashback to the beginning of their aquaintancy. Totally out of place for me. should have been somwhere in the beginning of the book. I loved the demon Steve . It was cute how he was excusing himself all the time for something he couldn´t prevent. Such a lovely guy.
The world the story is set in is great and as these misconceptions are hopefully out of the way I might be persuaded to read the sequel too.

Review:

For the first 200 hundred pages of the book was amazing but after that it went down hill. I appreciate the range of diverse characters. From different households ranging from poor to rich. My one issue instead of figuring out what they could do to stop the rating system from hurting other people. They decide to us it to hurt another person. That when it completely lost me from being a four stars book to being a 2 stars book.

Book: Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell
372 pages
How it fits: MC name is Agnes (5 letters)
"Warwickshire in the 1580s. Agnes is a woman as feared as she is sought after for her unusual gifts. She settles with her husband in Henley street, Stratford, and has three children: a daughter, Susanna, and then twins, Hamnet and Judith. The boy, Hamnet, dies in 1596, aged eleven. Four years or so later, the husband writes a play called Hamlet."

Review: This novel recently won the Women's Prize for Fiction and it's easy to see why! It's a beautifully written account of an unnamed Latin tutor, the son of abusive glove-maker, who marries an odd woman named Agnes. They have three children: Susanna, and twins Judith and Hamnet. The tutor moves to London and begins working in the playhouses. When Hamnet is 11 years old, he dies of the plague. The father immediately returns to London to continue his work on plays. Eventually he writes a play called Hamlet. The author does a wonderful job at portraying a mother’s grief for her child. As a mother, I found it extremely touching. I want to read more from this author.

What a great way to end the series although I'm sad to see it end. We got a chance to see them all get their HEAs with wedding and engagements and adoptions, basically a peek into their lives after. The boys are still snarky and sometimes naughty and their daddies keep them all in line. Fun series!!

Review:

It amazes me how well a man could write a book deals with a woman. It made me feel like it was written by a black woman and not by a white man. What I like most about this book is the fact it deal with different cases and not just one case which mystery books are famous for. I found how to deal with snakes in the engine very interesting. I will be carrying on with the book series.

Just make sure you aren't 3 books behind by next Friday's call, 10/9, if so, Jane may remove you.

If need be, you can always use your pass when the call is made tomorrow, if no one else calls it, & that gives you the entire week to get caught up. But that is up to you.

Good luck with your daughters apartment, I know moving can be so stressful, especially if it's one of our kids :)

Review: I had a really hard time with this one. If the retelling of the same events from the different POV was taken out, this would have been a great book. It did take me out of the book. Another thing I detested was how the women were treated at the agency. They are told who to date, and I think I missed why this was as they can't be agents, they can only be secretaries and not even administrative assistants. That really frosted me to the point that whenever something about them were mention I would get so made. And the one thing about Mark I hated, he is so sexist. So if we got rid of the way women were treated/viewed & the retelling of the same things from different POV, I would have totally enjoyed it. I'm not sure if I will be continuing on with this story or not.

On Dublin Street by Samantha Young
372 pages
How it fits: From the list Great Romance Novels, #27 (p.1)
Read: 9/30/2020
Rating: ★★1/2

Review: First of all, Contemporary Romance just isn't my thing. Give me a Historical any day and I'll swoon right along with the corseted heroine, but for some reason I don't enjoy CR. That said, this book had a lot of great reviews so I thought I'd give it a try. Nothing wrong with the premise: a young woman's family is killed in a car crash when she is 14. Several years later she moves to Scotland to start over. She finds a roommate and begins a "friends with benefits" situation with the roommate's brother. She is afraid to open up her heart because it had been so shattered earlier in life. So all this is ok, and I will admit the sex scenes are hot. I think the main problem here is that the characters are awful. Joss is completely self-absorbed and acts like she's too good for the universe. Every man she meets wants her. Braden is alpha male on steroids, bossing her around like Christian Grey (yes, I have read that one). Overall way too unbelievable. (Yes, Historicals are also unbelievable, but since they are set in another century I can just put them in the realm of Fantasy.)
