Mae Thomas I am looking for a new paranormal romance or urban fantasy book. It doesn't matter what the focus is on (vamps, shifter, witch, fae, etc...) I do like books that are more dark, gritty, and emotional. Bonus points if it's sexy but a slow burn will work too.

Thank you!

kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude | 398 comments HIGHLY emotional series, dark and gritty at times but also very beautifully written. The last book is due for release in October and the short stories are free to read on the author's website. One of my top 5 authors.
Wolfsong (Green Creek, #1) by T.J. Klune Ravensong (Green Creek, #2) by T.J. Klune Lovesong (Green Creek #2.5) by T.J. Klune Heartsong (Green Creek, #3) by T.J. Klune Feralsong (Green Creek #3.5) by T.J. Klune Lovesong Part II (Green Creek #3.6) by T.J. Klune Brothersong (Green Creek #4) by T.J. Klune

kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude | 398 comments And I'm diving into this one soon and think it fits the bill
Death's Dancer (Grace Bloods, #1) by Jasmine Silvera Dancer's Flame (Grace Bloods, #2) by Jasmine Silvera The Talon & the Blade by Jasmine Silvera

Cozen | 500 comments Born to be Bound (Alpha's Claim, #1) by Addison Cain Born to be Bound
Addison Cain is DARK. She has several books written. This book isn’t paranormal necessarily. It does deal with the Alpha and Omega Dynamic in a dystopian future. It’s also is very emotional. She also has a few other series starters you might want to check into.

Another very DARK vampire series Deadly Captive (Deadly Captive, #1) by Bianca Sommerland Deadly Captive
by Sommerland.

Broken (Omega's Destruction #1) by Eva Dresden Broken by Eva Dresden.
I know this also has the Alpha and Omega dynamic, but I can’t recall if they’re shifters or not. It’s Dark.

Scryer by Sinden West Scryer
It’s DARK but there’s an element that might not agree with some.

Less DARK and more main stream Paranormal Romance:

Kresley Cole has the Immortals After Dark series Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night (Immortals After Dark, #3) by Kresley Cole Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night

Ilona Andrews. created:
Burn for Me (Hidden Legacy, #1) by Ilona Andrews Burn for Me by
It’s a popular writer. They (it’s a husband and wife effort) have several other series, like Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews Magic Bites, and are slow burn (most sex stuff happens in the second book). Well written though, and liked.

K.F. Breene has two series

Born in Fire (Fire and Ice Trilogy, #1) by K.F. Breene Born in Fire

And

Into the Darkness (Darkness, #1) by K.F. Breene Into the Darkness
I enjoyed the sudden appearance of great power, and every flaw and uncontrollable skills to yield it. Our heroine might have the most powerful magic, but that means zilch when all she can do is blow up things and make accidental creatures. Every book she slowly learns to control it.

Suzanne Wright also has several series:

Feral Sins (The Phoenix Pack, #1) by Suzanne Wright Feral Sins which includes a few spin off series that all tie in together.

Burn (Dark in You, #1) by Suzanne Wright Burn Great series that revolves around demons.

And her Here Be Sexist Vampires (Deep In Your Veins, #1) by Suzanne Wright Here Be Sexist Vampires isn’t bad either.

Jennifer Armentrout wrote Wicked (A Wicked Trilogy, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout Wicked
It’s good and deals with the Fae.

With all my suggestions, please be sure to read the sample pages first before deciding.

Jeff Schanz (jeffschanz) | 18 comments Urban fantasy, but not really a romance, more of a love story with suspense action, etc.

Thalassophile_takemetotheocean (thalassophile-takemetotheocean) | 6 comments I recommend Hawaiian Heroes series by Cathryn Cade. They were written so well, and the story line is so good. Each Hawaiian main character is gifted with powers from Pele, the goddess of fire and lava. They are guardians of the islands. Just be warned though...it does have some imaginative and detailed love scenes, but they flow nicely with the story line.

Walking in Fire
Rolling in the Deep
Blooming in the Wild
Burning up the Rain

kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude | 398 comments Another one on my TBR that I think fits the bill is this one, book four is due for release later this month.
The Last Wolf (The Legend of All Wolves, #1) by Maria Vale A Wolf Apart (The Legend of All Wolves, #2) by Maria Vale Forever Wolf (The Legend of All Wolves, #3) by Maria Vale Season of the Wolf (The Legend of All Wolves, #4) by Maria Vale

kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude | 398 comments Other completed series I've read that may also fit the bill, all with medium to high steam levels

Darkness Comes (Darkness Comes, #1) by A.C. Warneke 2 books
At Death It Begins (ADIB, #1) by Elle Jefferson Dark Genesis (The Darkling Trilogy, #1) by A.D. Koboah Hyde (Hyde, #1) by Lauren Stewart all are 3 books per series
Dark Light (Dark Light, #1) by S.L. Jennings 3.5 books
The Turning (Urban Vampire, #1) by Pepper Pace 4 books
Night Myst (Indigo Court, #1) by Yasmine Galenorn 5.5 books
Full Moon Rising (Riley Jenson Guardian #1) by Keri Arthur 9 books
Witchling (Otherworld / Sisters of the Moon #1) by Yasmine Galenorn 21 books + lots of novellas. This one is very steamy from start to finish.

I have a list of a handful of authors that I shamelessly pimp out at any given opportunity simply because they deserve more love, and TJ is one of them.

The Beyond series by Kit Roche (also a duel writing effort) isn’t necessarily dark. But it more of a dystopian with a dark and erotic feel to it.

Ah, Shelly Laurenston is my list of pimpees (I do like to make up nonsense words 🤣) but her shifter books don't fit the 'brief' here. Far too fun, lighthearted and ridiculous, not to say utterly hilarious! I'm savouring the Dragon Kin books though... they're going on my 2021 list!

BJ (barbararhodes) | 61 comments Basic Instinct Received this rec on fb today, and have just read the first 2 books in the series. I really liked the grouchy Heroes, and the taboo shifter/human mates. It's got a murder mystery running as part of the setting, and I haven't any idea of who dun it. Loved it.

This one is VERY dark for a fantasy book.

Even the Wingless (Princes' Game #1) by M.C.A. Hogarth Even the Wingless by M.C.A Hogarth
(Princes' Game #1)

Also, I think any of the Vampire Queen books by Joey W. Hill would be considered a bit dark, sexy, and gritty.

Jeff Schanz (jeffschanz) | 18 comments Mae, if I may be so bold to say.... , I think mine might be up your alley. Slow burn love story, dark elements but a lot of light, fast paced stuff too.
A Vampyre's Daughter
Trapped on a desolate island, two unlikely kindred spirits, a troubled Army vet and a beautiful lonely vampyre, battle for their lives and their newfound love against a powerful, ancient evil that hunts them both.

Not a typical vampire story. A healthy mix of action, love, suspense, guns, gore, and humor. Fun for everyone!

ebook, print, and audiobook. The sequel, "A Vampyre's Sunrise" is also available.

message 28: by Chrissey (new)

Chrissey Harrison (chrisseyharrison) | 1 comments I've just started reading Vivian Shaw's Greta Helsing novels and I'm loving them. Not really dark and gritty, more soft and comforting, but a fantastic take on UF that I've not encountered before. The first one is Strange Practice. Strange Practice. I'm recommending these to everyone, I love them so much!

And if I might slip in a cheeky little plug for my own book... I write supernatural thrillers (I think of it as UF / Horror cross over) and my first has had a really good reception since it came out at the end of July. It's basically paranormal journalists take on demon mime artist, and has plenty of action, mystery, secret history, supernatural goings on and a touch of romance, if that sounds like your kind of thing... Mime

Born in Fire (Fire and Ice Trilogy, #1) by K.F. Breene Born in Fire series might fall into what you’re looking for. The FMC has super strength among other talents and super skills. She just doesn’t flaunt them in a human world. It’s also more of a secondary ability. Read the samples for it to find out if it’s your thing. It’ also develops more maturely in the second and third books. Just to give you heads up in case you’re not into those types of things.

Bunny and the Bear (Furry United Coalition, #1) by Eve Langlais Bunny and the Bear also might work. Shifters but her bunny form is pretty strong..

hi
I recently read the supernatural battle series by Kelly St Clare. I think you'd enjoy them since its a bit different from other urban fantasy books I've read recently. There are 2 series out now- one with vampires and the other werewolves.

another series is the hall of blood and mercy series which is very YA but it's still fun. Reading them just made me feel happy more than anything.

kittykat AKA Ms. Tortitude | 398 comments I've recently finished this very fated mates based 'werewolf' series and it kind of fits the bill and has an RS element too.

Eoghan Brunkard Clementine Lane

Bold as it is, I actually am going to plug my own book. Its urban realist fantasy (doesn't that sound awful pretentious?).

Basically the book is set in an inner city community in Dublin, it features a lot the wit you'd expect from Roddy Doyle but within the main narrative is a supernatural core and you can do worse right now as I am currently running on countdown on https://www.amazon.com/Clementine-Lan...
