Don't be afraid to make a character who contradicts themselves. Make a hypocrite; it's only human. Make a character who's vain as fuck and cares what other people think, but also isn't completely superficial. Make someone who's too loyal to their friends or make someone who's too detached. Don't be afraid to make the John Adams of the group - someone who's simultaneously at the same time WHAT UP 2014 PSAT incredibly arrogant and incredibly insecure. Don't be afraid to pull a Jefferson and make a character who's more than eloquent on paper but terrible at speaking in person, or vice versa. Make them struggle in school, or make them excel. Make them wish they were skinnier or curvier or whatever the fuck you want. Make them jealous of people but content at the same time. Make your character have a crush on more than one person at a time - hell, have them string along someone just for the fun of it. Have them be good at sports or suck at sports. Make them artistic or maybe they don't have a musical bone in their body. Make them a pushover, or make them ruthless. MAKE YOUR CHARACTERS REAL.

Kikki (kikki-not-kiki) Do NOT go overboard on drama in the history, not unless you plan on taking it very seriously and having it influence their present and future behaviors. Someone who has been abused, taken advantage of or has done drugs will not turn around and be hunky dory super cheery. Those kinds of things scar and affect you and if you want to use themes like that, you have to take it VERY SERIOUSLY

Yup, I'm the history-obsessed one.

Kikki (kikki-not-kiki) Do NOT take disabilities of any kind or nature lightly!!

If you are going to roleplay a character suffering from a mental, emotional or physical disorder, you need to research this and treat it very seriously. The last thing you want to do is make light of something very serious. You never know who is online and who has what for starters, which means that perhaps you could end up deeply offending someone by not portraying such a character correctly.

For real though... people toss the term OCD around like it's nothing these days

Kikki (kikki-not-kiki) The main reason i put that is because I am so effing sick and fracking tired of people putting Schizophrenia on their character to make them 'stand out' or whatever, but then THEY KNOW NOTHING OF THE MENTAL ILLNESS AND IT NEVER ONCE CROPS UP IN THE ROLEPLAY! YOU CANT DO THAT IT IS A HUGE DEAL TO BE SCHIZOPHRENIC! IT IS SOMETHING THAT WILL AFFECT YOU EVERY SINGLE FREAKING DAY!

*ahem* anywho, that's the main reason I posted is. Not necessarily because of how people post OCD a lot (which is not to say it is not as important as any other) but that I was seeing stuff like 'oh she's schizophrenic' or 'she's autistic' but never ONCE seeing that actually show in the roleplay. I had a charrie who had seizures before(granted he was a vampire and it was a side effect of his powers but still) I googled side effects of seizures and made sure to incorporate that into him and who he was and how he would react and recover from such things.

Get inspired and make your characters. Heroes, Villains, or Fantasy, any kind.
