Vera takes an instant dislike to Mercy. Was it her or was there something else going on with this woman?

I also had a hard time with Vera. Maybe she senses how bright Mercy is, as opposed to those who are living as second class zombies in the women's quarters. It was a control issue, possibly more.

I think Vera realized very early that Mercy wouldn't be a person who followed rules and worshipped Pete. She liked to keep the women under her thumb and knew this one wasn't going to be easy.

I'm thinking Vera was also sick. A couple of times her yellow skin was mentioned. Sounds like liver problems or advanced pancreatic cancer.

I think you’re both right. Vera definitely had control issues and saw Mercy as a threat (maybe someone Pete would admire). Remember, Mercy is very attractive. I also thought Vera was sick. Sounded like she was jaundiced, a symptom of both diseases you mention, Robin.

Whatever her issues, this group gave her an opportunity to be top dog, probably for the first time in her life. She probably didn’t earn the right to be in a position of leadership other than her loyalty to Pete.

I agree with everyone. Vera was afraid that Mercy could be a partner for Pete and Vera would be pushed down in rank. Her jealousy is the only emotion allowed in the camp. I suspect she believed that pushing Mercy would give Vera more favor with Pete.

Agree with everyone. I think Vera is "jealous" of Mercy...and maybe a little fearful of what it might mean to her own ranking.

I agree, Vera had absolutely nothing in her life but her position with Pete. Any misstep on her part, like keeping all the women under control, was a threat.

Agree with all your comments. Vera was the "top female" and would have seen Mercy as a threat.
