SOLVED. Novel about girls getting acting break, one is trailer trash, one probably is not female. [s]

About 20 years ago I read a fiction book about a couple of girls who got their acting break in a new tv show. One of the girls was, by her own description, trailer trash. Her Mother came to live with her once she had been cast in the show, and the Mother was trouble, possibly used to be a hooker, and flitted in and out of her life. One of the other girls was the “daughter” of an aging actress who was so desperate to have a daughter, the daughter was actually transgender but nobody knew it. As I recall, the reveal of the daughter actually not being female was the shock. In my mind I pictured the aging actress to be a Joan Crawford type. There were a couple other subplots but I have forgotten.

I hope someone can give me the title or even the author’s name.

This could actually be the same book. I don't have a great recollection of the other plot lines, but I know the mother was really reclusive, she had been a very beautiful and famous actress herself, and the "daughter" was super selfish, self absorbed and manipulative. She wanted so badly to win an award for a film she had done and I seem to remember her doing sneaky things to sabotage the other actresses nominated. In the end there was, I believe, a car accident, but I don't remember exactly how detailed the reveal was. She was kind of outed though.

I bet it is the same book. I can't imagine two books
released around the same time with such a similar plot line.

I don’t recall her sabotaging the other actresses, but as I said it’s been 20 years since I read it!
