Mark Roberts | 2 comments Have re-read all of Tony Hillerman's books during the pandemic, a lot of Sherlock Holmes, read a lot of Sherlock Holmes fanfic (none of which is really great ... sigh). Need a mystery series that is smart, well-written, but doesn't creep me out and doesn't have a lot of profanity (that's a big turn-off for me). Love historical fiction. I have read some cozies but usually they get formulaic and aren't exactly smart mysteries.

Suggestions?

David Freas (quillracer) | 2953 comments Rhys Bowen's Molly Murphy series (set in turn of the century NYC)
Victoria Thompson's 'Gaslight Mysteries' series (ditto)
M. Ruth Myers's Maggie Sullivan series (set in 1930s - 40s Dayton, OH)
Raymond Chandler's Phillip Marlowe series (set in 1930s - 40s LA)
Barbara Cleverly's Joe Sandilands series (set in India and England between WWI and WWII).
Dick Francis's books set in the world of horse racing.
John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee series (set in Florida in teh 60s to early 80s).
Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series (set in a fictional NYC from the 50s to the 2005 - may have the occasional profanity but overall pretty 'clean').

BookCrazy | 4 comments Have you read the Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael series? These books got me hooked on historical fiction. The books are well grounded in the history of England in 1135.

Margaret Frazer's Dame Frevisse series is well researched and written.

Excellent murder mystery/crime series:
Ian Rankin Inspector Rebus series set in Edinburgh
Andrea Camilleri Inspector Montalbano series set in Sicily
Louise Penny's Gamache Series

Liz | 1192 comments I recommend Joy Ellis’ Nikki Galena, Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache or Elly Griffiths’ Ruth Galloway series. All feature a lot of character development.

Mark Roberts | 2 comments I do appreciate everyone's help. I should've been more clear - anything with rape/torture/horribly gruesome murder described in intricate detail is a giant no for me.

Gonna try the Sharpe Series and that Joe Sandilands series. Then we'll see where things are. Both of those look very good to me.

Again, many thanks.
