Joanne (joabroda1) | 12661 comments @BC-thank you, I am feeling better today-the sun is out and the temp is at a tolerable level of 80(F) so I was able to work out in my garden this morning-that always raises my spirits.

100% agree on all the points you made in your rant (a good rant is a good thing for the soul!)

Great idea Joi! You can do this on National Geo site-Let me see what I can come up with! I used it last year for my around the world challenge and was going to do it again this year, but Polls and other challenges have stopped me from adding to it.

I'm enjoying my retirement, Fran. I recommend it. I can't imagine trying to provide care and education for a group of young children right now.

I'm frustrated at being isolated from my adult children, but I almost feel that it's inevitable that at least one of them will call to tell me the virus got them.

My son is in the Navy, stationed in San Diego. He's a machinist. For the first 2 or 3 months it didn't seem to me that the Navy was doing much of anything to control the virus. He said they had sanitizer and masks at work, but no effort was made for social distancing.

About a month ago, they were put on some restrictions. Off duty travel of no more than 50 miles off base, no large group gatherings, only necessary trips away from home when off duty, etc. .... Sounds a bit like too little, too late, especially, as I'm told, the new regulations were delivered in a closed room crowded with more than 100 people who were not wearing masks.

So, I'm just dreading that phone call.

Rachel N. | 2250 comments It is a beautiful day here in Michigan. Enjoying it before it warms up again. I feel for everyone trying to figure out how to educate kids safely. My youngest nephews school district decided to have virtual learning only for their first semester. The older two are already home schooled. I voted by absentee ballot in our primary yesterday with no problems. It looks like they are going to try to improve the system to get faster results for November's election. I get annoyed by people wondering if we'll open up more before Labor Day. Right now we'll be lucky if we don't have to close down again. I highly doubt we'll open up more.

I think we need to start thinking smaller and neighborhoods in many different areas. Large centralized schools, shopping centers, restaurants are no longer safe.

On many issues we can take a look at how can we use these skills? Restaurants are suffering and will continue to for some time, I don't think tax exemptions for power business lunches is the way to go to revitalize the business. Inevitably people are going to be hungry, it seems entirely feasible to use restaurants and the workers skills to help feed communities.

"But, BnB, your recent experience highlights one of the areas that isn't being discussed - schools are discussed, nursing homes and group homes, but not day care and nurseries: how do you handle day care? Safely doing handoffs of kids from/to parents. Keep young children safe? Keep their caretakers and teachers safe? "

I've been reading that daycare is going to be crucial in getting America back to work, but we need to do it in a safe way.

if they are so crucial we need to value them. Childcare and preschool professionals are vastly underpaid. If they are essential show it monetarily.

The handoff was the problem where I work, because it is hard to do and keep social distance. While wearing a mask, I wasn't 6 ft social distanced.

Part of the problem and everyone's problem is we need to keep ourselves safe to keep everyone else safe.

The parent is an essential worker in healthcare who is routinely tested and was without symptoms, so she assumed it was safe to drop off her daughter. I as a child development professional am considered essential, so interfacing the two remains a problem. If teacher and parent do not seem to want to be near each other and friendly with each other in creates a barrier for the child to move from one to the other. I'm trying in my mind to figure out how to social distance but keep the child anxiety free.

And, masks obscure the face, hiding expression that can be used to reassure children during handoff.

Fran, you mention that the parent is routinely tested for covid. Where I work, health care workers are not routinely tested for covid and I think that this is the norm. People entering the hospital, both staff and visitors, just have their temperatures taken.

I hope you remain well and that your test results are negative.

Robin P | 5831 comments My sister-in-law in Tulsa OK tested positive. She has been pretty much a denier and thinks hydroxychloroquine and/or prayer will cure people. She was going to go to Trump's rally a month or so ago but decided not to. However, she has been going to church, where they supposedly had masks and distance. Also she babysits her grandchildren, who are 2 and 4 just about every day, and those children's parents aren't the most responsible. So there are plenty of choices for how she got it. She is a very sweet person and has trouble saying no to taking the kids, even now!

I have a sabbbatical the school-year after this one (2021-22) and really really hope that I can do some travelling then and won't be sitting at home all the time.

I really like the ideas you mention in your 'rant', Booknblues! I don't think it sounds like a rant, though. It actually sounds pretty thought-through.

Also, your list of travelling ideas inspires me, Theresa, to make a similar list myself :-)
And of course I would love to show you around!

Have a good day today, everyone!

Never thought of this but what is happening to all the academics who had sabbaticals this year? They can't all reschedule. Some professors/scholars/scientists use the time to stay home and write books or do research but many travel, take positions in other countries for the year, etc.

Actually a friend of mine is on sabbatical this entire calendar year and is thanking god she has been because once the sabbatical ends, she will be retired. Thus never having to deal with all the problems her college has been coping with -- and poorly by the way -- since pandemic shut down. A new dean had just started in 2019 too and the school was already one of the many smaller liberal arts colleges that were struggling, needing to update their curriculum and many policies to remain competitive. There was already a lot of conflict between old guard and new generation...and it's causing a lot of problems with making decisions during pandemic.

So she's so happy to be out of it now and then forever. Actually on her sabbatical year she was taking over editorship of a scholarly publication which was pretty much all virtual so while some trips have been cancelled, they were vacation trips not work related and not affecting her work or research.

message 73: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15683 comments And the hits just keep on coming....

A large part of Manhattan had a blackout this AM. And temps were in the 70s so a/cs were mostly off -- cause something to do with transformers - it is always is.

And thanks to insomnia, I experienced the whole thing! I was in the kitchen about 5.15 AM looking for a snack and actually cleaning out the fridge when the lights flickered a couple of times then everything went dark and silent. Fortunately I had a flashlight at hand, finished what I was doing and then went looking for news to find out what was going on. Before I could find any answers the power came back on -- out in my nabe for about 45 minutes.

Given how many places outside NYC are still without power due to the storm on Tuesday this doesn't sound like a big deal and most slept through it. But the truth is that it's worrisome for a huge swath of Manhattan to have a blackout due to some problem with ConEd and it not be in the middle of excessively high temps which cause the systems to be overstrained from A/C use.

So add to the 2020 List of Horrors: Blackout in Manhattan.

Charlotte | 1701 comments That's crazy about the blackout!

To our Michigan friends, how close are you to St. Clair? That is where my aunt and cousins live. My mom has gone to visit them, but I haven't and need to.

My husband and I both have a goal to visit all 50 states. Due to our move across the country, he has more than I do since he drove the dogs across and I flew. We keep playing around with the idea of driving around with the dogs and visiting the a bunch of national parks.

I told my mom that as soon as it is safe to travel again, we need to get her to Scotland. That's at the top of her list and I know that time is precious. I don't want her to keep putting it off and then never get a chance to go.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12661 comments @Charlotte- I am about (in good traffic) an hour or so away from Lake St Clair-which is the Lake that connects The Detroit River to Lake Huron to the North and to Lake Erie to the South. There is also a community called St. Clair Shores, still on the Lake though. which is closer to Detroit. There is also St. Clare County which is actually on the Lake farther north. So, I could get to any of them fairly quickly and easily-

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11142 comments A lot of my family in Connecticut and Fishers Island had power outages too this week. When I was growing up downstate it happened all the time. There were a lot of Con Ed jokes.

When it happens here, it usually comes back within seconds. I think most of the state's power is generated near Niagara Falls, so we might have some advantages (not cost-wise though).

message 82: by NancyJ (last edited Aug 07, 2020 02:36PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11142 comments Charlotte, I like your idea of visiting all the states. For years we've been planning to travel overseas but now I think maybe we should focus on traveling across the United States. I've seen very little of the US now that I think about it. There were many places I visited for business or conferences, but I didn't really see them. I am glad though that I got to see New Orleans twice before the big hurricane.

Friends of ours timed it just right. They bought an RV and traveled across the whole US. They came back to care for their mother and sold the RV before the pandemic hit.

Charlotte I'm about an hour from St. Clair too. I think I live a bit south of Joanne. If you come out this way we'll definitely have to have a meet up for everyone in the area. I'm familiar with all the towns along the coast in St. Clair county because I used to cover that area for work before I got promoted, now I cover the west side.
