Teri-K | 305 comments This is a mystery, maybe considered cozy, that I read in paperback over 10 years ago. Maybe 20 years ago or more, I'm just not sure. I thought it was the first in a series but it could be a stand alone.

As I remember it the woman is filling in for someone cleaning a funeral home at night when a body moves. I believe it was a bad guy who was hiding there for some reason. (Or maybe she hears them in the building.) I think he holds her at gun point and forces her out to her van or truck. But she might follow him for some reason.

I only remember a bit after that. She's driving around the country with a man - cop or bad guy - at night. There are some bad roads. They come to a boat storage yard and something happens there. Someone's brother might be involved.

I've tried to find this book for more than a year but keep striking out. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Amber (Daisymau) (daisymau) | 1912 comments Walking After Midnight by Karen Robards. It's been a long time since I read it, but the h owns the cleaning service. I just remember the h calling the H Steve, Frankenstein.

I also think that the noises that she heard at the funeral home was the incinerator being lit to burn the "body". I know that Steve was a cop, but I don't know why the bad guys were chasing him.

Teri-K | 305 comments Amber, you are right, that's the book. I've only read a few Robards' books, and I never would have found it without you! I've checked it out on Overdrive and have started reading enough to know that it is the one. Thanks so much.
