If you were wanting a more modern book, I'd say Morrison's New X-Men, then Whedon's Astonishing X-Men, then maybe House of M; but if you want to start at the 'start', Claremont is the way to go.

Agreed: Claremont first and even though New X-Men isn't my favorite, you kind of need it to get to Whedon's run.

For a modern darker run, I'd also include X-Force by Kyle/Yost, Messiah Complex and Second Coming. Those all feed into each other in that order.

An even darker run would be Remender's Uncanny X-Force.

Here's the final word on Nemo. I have bought both and you can see pics below. (as in all things . . . the pics don't give it justice) FYI when I write Version 1 or smaller version I'm talking about the 1905-1909 and when I write Version 2 or larger version it's the 1909-1927.

This is not a Vol. 1 vol. 2 situation. This is a version 1, version 2. version 1 is for people that would like some Nemo and version 2 is for everything. I actually really like this idea and wish more companies would do it.

The skinny, if you are a completest and need all the Nemo AND would like a biography on Winsor McCay, then you get the bigger one. If you're not huge on it and want some stories and great art, just get the smaller version. It is still very very impressive and oh is it cheap right now.

Version 1 next to Version 2

Version two has a nice linen cover, similar to the Dark Horse Library Editions. Version 1 has a faux linen like cover and the image is glossier.



The larger version also comes with a second book that is a biography of Winsor McCay's works. That book is the same scale but is a paperback. It's titled "Winsor McCay A Life of Imaginative Genius." I'm not sure, but when looking at the listing on Amazon, this is what I think "2 Vol" stands for. Not a second volume to the 1905-1909 version but rather this 1909-1927 comes with two books.







The larger version also comes with a carrying case

Lastly, the binding on the larger version is superior than the smaller, but that is because it has to be as a much thicker book. The binding on the smaller version is also very good and I'm happy with both.





As for why did I buy both? The smaller will be in the waiting room of my office. I do estate planning and have old clients so I think they will enjoy it . . . and look at this art!

Claremont's 17 year run on the X-Men is THE X-men book to read if you want to get into the X-Men IMHO. It reads better/at a higher reading level than some of the gold and silver age titles though there are a few folks I've seen comment they felt it was too wordy for their tastes. The art is frequently really well done.

Remender's Uncanny X-Force is one of the best modern X-Men runs. It will read somewhat better if you have read Age of Apocalypse. The omnibus is well out of print and highly desirable so cost a pretty penny when you find someone willing to part with theirs.

I thought Yost's run on X-Force was enjoyable. I want to say during the run we had a mini-series with great art from Dell'Otto doing the interiors (X-Force: Sex and Violence). His art is awesome.

Thanks for the pictures Erik. Very helpful and informative. I'd love to pick up the second edition someday, but for now I'm satisfied with the first.

Wow so much info! Thanks for the advice on X-Men. My plan was Claremont, Morrison, then whatever omnibuses I could find in print. I've been wanting Uncanny X-Force for a while but won't pay white whale prices for it.

Big difference between the Nemos! I bought "version 1" Little Nemo as well and it is indeed huge. Not being a completist for something like this, I'll check it out and if I don't love it then I'll make my money back on it, so thanks for the heads up Erik.

Also bought a LCSD variant of Outcast Book One last night on eBay for HALF of cover price. Didn't know this thing even existed. So this will probably replace my standard version which I can then sell : ) Good times.

I have been collecting hardcovers for nearly 2 years and I am trying to slow down and be more selective with my buying. I was wondering if we each posted a picture of our collections and then suggested things to each other, it may be nice to have direct recommendations for things to look into next.
For example, randomly (though appreciated!) someone saw my collection recently and suggested Animal Man, which was no where on my radar, but now reading about it I think it may end up being my first DC omni sometime soon. Just a thought...

I don't own it and haven't read the material, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. However, from what I've read about it, it sounds like it's useful for historical perspective on the characters rather than for GotG stories; first appearance, key issues, etc. The fact that it is so heavily discounted speaks to it's sales, which indicates that it hasn't been well received. That being said, with the price as low as it is it may be worth the value for that historical perspective.

I've got it, but I think I only know the Warlock stories, the issues tying in to that first Thanos arc, and the two Avengers issues featuring Drax & Moondragon. Worth noting that the Warlock & Thanos stuff is out there in better collections- Warlock by Jim Starlin Complete Colelction tpb (or Masterworks v2), and the Avengers vs Thanos tpb. They're not oversized, but they contain more than a snippet of their respective stories. If its the classic Starlord/Rocket/Groot issues that are catching your eye, it's probably worth picking up - I don't know if they're reprinted in any readily available books.

I think the book's generally considered a bit of a dud as none of the stories are particularly linked; there's no running theme or arc tying all the individual stories together (other than they feature the members of the GOTG roster from the first film).

Started and love Preacher. But I'm torn on how to collect. Absolutes are overpriced but the OHCs are just sort of meh from Vertigo.

Also looking at The Filth (I'm a glutton for punishment), Uncanny X-Men, X-Men Legion, and various Bat titles (Year 100, Death and the Maidens).

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated!

Have you read Sleeper Omnibus by Brubaker? What about The Planetary Omnibus by Warren Ellis? What about Richard Stark’s Parker: The Martini Edition by Darwyn Cooke? What about Locke & Key by Joe Hill? What about Blacksad by Juan Díaz Canales? ... should i carry on? :)

The Metabarons hardcover listed below is what I have, and it's a great place to start. The main storyline is collected in this book, however there are some additional related stories in separate hardcovers.

It's worth noting that Metabarons was a spin-off from The Incal, which is considered by many to be a classic in its own right. I much prefer Metabarons over The Incal. You don't need to read The Incal before reading Metabarons. If you enjoy Metabarons you may find yourself diving further into the Jodorowsky universe (or Jodoverse).
