Rick | 41 comments The book is ridiculously large and heavy but for Marvel not having an equivalent to the Absolute format from D.C., this is what we get. I have the Marvels Platinum collection, the King Size Kirby collection, and the Stan Lee Marvel Treasury collection. I love having these seminal creators and stories in this presentation style. I don't feel the desire for the X-men or Wolverine adamantium collections or the Captain America or Avengers Vibranium collections though. If they did and Earth X or Loeb/Sale Colors collection in this format I would be all over them.

I think they are comparable in size to the big Taschen books. Does anyone have both to give a fair comparison?

Dustin Boggs (ramkitty) | 91 comments Got myself a new kallax bookcase because wife was whinging that I was taking over her bookcase and she couldn't find anything also preordered tmnt idw deluxe 5. Now I need more because the kallax is bare. Also it is just a touch too small for sixth gun to fit so I need some kind of book holder for the top preferably something nerdy.

Sixth gun doesn't fit?! Was going to get those but that's a problem for me. Back to the drawing board...

I'll check my sixth gun vol 1-3 tomorrow, but they fit fine on my shelves, I always thought they were comparable to absolutes in size.

message 2155: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Boggs (ramkitty) | 91 comments Sixth gun are taller by by about a centimetre they are a press fit in a few of the pockets due to tolerances but I won't do that I will make or buy some nerd bookends for the top I only got the 4x4 unit so it's only about 4 ft squared

message 2156: by Reece (new)

Reece (mrrallentando) | 309 comments This is how I dealt with the oversized Sixth Gun books.

message 2157: by PorkPiePusher (new)

PorkPiePusher | 45 comments Aside from the standard Marvel Omnis that came out this month, I got the two Usagi Yojimbo Gallery Editions from Darkhorse, both brand new and sealed, and wouldn't you know it - both getting unglued under the binding. I think this brings the number of DH "deluxe" editions I've had problems with to well over two thirds. They really use the cheapest sh*t in their books. At this point I'm surprised when a DH HC doesn't fall apart on me.

message 2158: by Reece (new)

Reece (mrrallentando) | 309 comments That's crazy, I've never had those issues with DH. I wonder if it could be partially due temperature or humidity differences.

PorkPiePusher | 45 comments Reece wrote: "That's crazy, I've never had those issues with DH. I wonder if it could be partially due temperature or humidity differences."

I thought of that since I'm in Belgium (birthplace of rain), but I order most of my stuff from the US or France and Conan, Sin City, Fear Agent, Hellboy and Usagi all started ungluing on the first read, same day as unboxing and removing the plastic. Also, Image, DC and Marvel get unglued at a one-in-a-twenty rate, and even then it's not like the WHOLE spine unglues, but usually one or two inches which is easily servicable. Even Humanoids and Panini don't unglue.

EDIT: FFS! I forgot Empowered is also DH, that is another DH "deluxe" that needed aftermarket gluing.

message 2160: by Donovan (last edited Mar 11, 2017 05:23PM) (new)

Donovan | 1154 comments That sounds really atypical from my experience. I love my deluxe editions. Especially Dark Horse and Image. And I also live in Oregon where it's very, very rainy.

I love DH in general. Great comics, amazingly handsome editions, luxurious size, great variety of deluxe editions, great page color and extra content; but as per my experience - and honestly - well constructed DH editions are endemic.

First read ffs.

message 2162: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments That is too bad! I sympathize. I am a little OCD and my FF Vol 3 marvel omni arrived unglued and I was annoyed for days. My biggest ongoing issue has been what I would describe as very faint scratches under the jacket on some marvel omnis. Only have 1 DH so can't comment more on them.

Re: Usagi Yojimbo what's the best format and place to start?

message 2163: by Donovan (new)

Donovan | 1154 comments That sucks. I've never had that happen, especially with indie pub books. I would email DH about that. Seriously. They're a smaller company. You never know, they might be able to help.

message 2164: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
Ugh! I've never examined my books that closely but now I can't unsee that. I hope none of mine have that problem.

message 2165: by PorkPiePusher (new)

PorkPiePusher | 45 comments Small update. A buddy of mine that professionally restores books had a look and said that the cause was cheap glue on heavy pages. Anyway, I fixed the book by applying some bookbinding glue with a thin, long needle and the result is satisfactory.

There is a buttload of UY material out now and I gave up on collecting all of it a while ago. However, I love the gallery editions. They apparently copile the few most important/best written/artistically impressive stories in a visually impressive A3 format.

Go for - The Usagi Yojimbo Saga - collection but if you want the OHCs of them, the first OHC is OOP and very hard to find since the OHCs are limited editions but you can find every volume of the TPBs anywhere.

My DH are good to go. Conan and big damn sin city lay on their back though because I'm too scared to sit upright for that binding. Even if strong, seems like a lot of pressure on those beasts. My hellboy library edition didn't even unglue after sadly getting soaked from a leak in the roof after heavy rain.

Nickviola wrote: "Usagi Yojimbo what's the best format and place to start? ..."

I started with this volume: https://www.amazon.com/Usagi-Yojimbo-...

I just wanted to know if I liked the content enough to look into the other volumes. I bought a copy for $12 from IST damaged books sales (it had a slightly bumped corner). I've finished the first volume. At over 600 pages the content starts off slow and it took a little bit for me to get into it but there are some good stories later in the volume. The art is all black and white.

I've not had any of my DH books with the binding fall apart yet. I've noticed the binding hasn't been as sturdy on The Goon Library editions and I try to be cautious reading them. So far so good.

I actually have my Colossal Conan volume upright on the shelf.

My Conan is also upright, but every single one of my heavier omnis has a small folded paper or wood support for the pages so that they always rest on it.

Oh jeez. Is this what everyone recommends then: Laying them down flat or supporting the paper underneath if they are standing up?

How big a book do you think it needs to be before supporting it/laying it down long term?

Not really an exact science, but in my collection you'll likely find everything around or above the 800 page mark supported by at least a tightly rolled up postit square.

This is a rolled up receipt from grocery shopping. I've found that toilet paper squares make a good measure for single rolls.

message 2177: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments I mentioned this in the marvel section, but am so in love with this omnibus that I am posting again here:

The Waid Daredevil Omni is now my favorite constructed Marvel omni. (1) It's the perfect size, (2) the dust jacket feel just a bit firmer than some others (I think thats not just in my head), (3) the binding is perfect and opens wide open and sits on every page, (4) the cover is awesome, and (5) they weave in the Spider-Man and Punisher issues seamlessly so it all reads well together. Beyond that (6) Rivera and Samnee just kill it on art, and (7) Waid writes a hell of Matt Murdock.

Reece (mrrallentando) | 309 comments I just found a new copy of Captain America Omnibus vol. 1 by Brubaker at a local comic shop. Paid cover price of $75 but that's a decent price considering they're going for $100 or more online.

I think that's reasonable. Nice find! All my LCSs (which are surprisingly few) are tapped out of anything good (or at least with what I need.)

Good find. You'll get some profit for that on ebay.

message 2181: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments I might be insane but, including shipping, I just paid 170 on eBay for both of the X-Men Omnibi by Claremont/Lee... in Italian... from Italy.

My thinking is... (1) Thats close to 300 dollars cheaper than the combination would be in English, (2) I dont forsee any upcoming reprints, (3) I need to practice my Italian anyway, and (4) its from a seller cinemamovie.store that has a 99.5% from 30,000+ transactions.

Can someone please tell me if I am nuts within the next 24 hours so I can cancel?

message 2182: by Reece (new)

Reece (mrrallentando) | 309 comments If you have a passing knowledge of Italian then it sounds like a good deal. I'd be lost trying to make sense of it.

message 2183: by Ooh_jim (new)

Ooh_jim | 251 comments You can usually find quite a few of the Panini issued omnibuses going fairly cheap from people who didn't realize they were buying the Italian version. I know I've made the mistake a couple of times..

As for best LCS find: I got my hands on a new Fall of the Mutants ohc for rrp a couple of months back; discounted as the shrink was ripped and practically falling off.

message 2184: by Donovan (new)

Donovan | 1154 comments Sounds awesome. If you know Italian : )

Dustin Boggs (ramkitty) | 91 comments Preordered batman knight fall omni for under 80 cad and ordered sixth gun 2 and a set of hogwarts express bookends for the kallax

message 2186: by Ooh_jim (new)

Ooh_jim | 251 comments Just picked up both Absolute volumes of Planetary for £100 + £20 shipping from US. Still cheaper than I've seen vol 1 alone go for anywhere else.

message 2187: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
Wow! That's one of my favorite series. My only complaint about the absolutes is that they didn't include the three one shots with Authority, Batman and JLA.

message 2188: by Ooh_jim (new)

Ooh_jim | 251 comments Yeah, Planetary's got to be in my top 5. Shame the crossovers are missing - I'll have to see if I can pick up the tpb somewhere.

In other news, I've also just snapped up a like-new copy of Deluxe Criminal v2 for £59, It's clearly my lucky day!

Now I wonder what the odds are of a Claremont Wolverine omni popping up before the end of the day...

message 2189: by The Lion's Share (new)

The Lion's Share Yeah I thought the omnibus was much better value for money.

Just ordered
East of West Year Two
Preacher Deluxe V5 and V6

I wasn't blown away by EoW Year One, but Hickman plays the long game so I'll give this one more chance...

I'm into Preacher though! That first read was a flop. And those Absolutes are very, very pretty.

Yeah, I read the first TPB of MP and didn't like it. Maybe I need to give it a second chance.

Glad you like Preacher! I'm just about done with V3 and Cassidy is becoming my favorite character.

Now part of me wishes I had the Absolutes but that's ok. I have both Y the Last Man and Preacher in these Deluxes, and that'll just have to do for now.

message 2193: by Donovan (new)

Donovan | 1154 comments MP starts slow. Gets crazy real fast though. And the deluxes are amazing. I've got the first two : D

Yeah the Preacher Absolutes are twice the price but they're also twice the book apparently. Leather bound, sewn binding. That would be amazing. But yeah, pretty pricey. Might be the deluxes for me...

message 2194: by Paul (new)

Paul (paulsaini) | 163 comments I recently got (but have not read):
Daredevil Omnibus by Waid
Hawkman Omnibus by Johns
Sixth Gun Deluxe vol. 1 (I got this solely as a result of how much this group loves it...I'm sure I will too!)
Empress HC
Batman A Death In the Family HC (got a great price on ebay for a like-new copy); I bet DC solicits a deluxe edition now that I bought this ;)

Also some trades:
Elektra by Milligan, Hama and Deodata
Incredible Hulk Complete Collection 1 & 2 by Loeb
